Does anyone know what color socks enlisted Navy men were issued for ship board wear during WW II ?
I wondered because my Dad spent three years as a Navy Armed Guard on Merchant Marine Ships ( they ran the guns ) and he always wore white socks. I thought it was because he had jungle rot on his toes and white socks were supposed to be beneficial but then I have been thinking it may also be because of what he wore in the Navy.
Mine had his ship torpedoed on Nov 2nd 1944-in the Pacific by U 181--formerly Wolfgand Luth's boat. I think most of teh Armed Guard were killed in the 2nd torpedo explosion?
Anyway, most accounts online of what actually happened are wrong. Ive tried correcting as per the long letter I have from the MM's North Atlantic Chapter. But every time I do? some bugwit changes it again with false info.
I read that the Armed Guards had the highest casualty rate of any branch with the possible exception of submariners.
Not sure how accurate that is but it sure sounds plausible.
