I"ve been fortunate enough to go the last two years in a row for 2nd Elk rifle season on a "trespass fee" hunt.

With the budget tighter this year, i figured i'd save that $$ this year and not go.. I'm really, really, really regretting not planning a hunt out west this year..

Anybody know of any last minute hunts in units with OTC bull / either sex tags, or anyone want to take a complete stranger on a hunt ? :)

That "out west" hunting bug has bitten me and bitten me hard. I would just about give up deer hunting here @ home, just to go out west once a year.. there is nothing more beautiful than those mountains to me..

Nothing like it is there? I don't think I've gone in about 10 years, but my neighbors been chasing em with a bow the last few weekends while I babysit his dog.Maybe I can weasel some jerky out of him [emoji1]

The in-laws in the next state east of us did well in the tag dept. this season.

three elk tags and four buck tags to try and fill.

There is going to be bullets flying every where !!

I even went online tonight looking for last minute cancelled hunts that guides might be trying to fill.

I guess i could just drive out there and blindly find some public land to hunt :)

Check with the Department of Wildlife, as far as I know elk tags are issued for specific hunting areas, not statewide. If you can get a tag they can tell you where the public land is that you can hunt on.

Understand

Well, I don't hunt anymore, fishing is my thing now. But, I totally understand how you feel. Spent time in Monatana and Colorado this summer. The beauty of the Rocky Mountains has affected me greatly!

Why don't you call CO Game and Fish and ask them about left over Elk Tags?
They will probably be for Game Management Areas which overlay public land, mostly National Forests.
And leftover tags will be for the remote of the remote, hard to hunt, difficult to even get to.

Yeah.. I know there are left over elk tags, but i'm just moaning about not going this year... Watching the "Western Hunter" on the outdoor channel doesn't help much...

You can bet I'll be out there next year !

Occasionally I see one wandering the yards of the neighborhood, along with a bunch of deer and turkeys. I counted eleven deer in the neighbors yard the other morning. I have no idea what the tag situation is, though they seem quite plentiful to the point of being pests.

Mister gtk...

Them ain't mountains... those are spires on a Cathedral... and the Almighty is the caretaker. Being there... on my horse... is one of the greatest pleasures of my life.

True, true, sir - thank you for that.

I expect you would appreciate the perspective of one Del Gue:

"Ain't this somethin'? I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man -- acted like they was gut-shot."

'Make your life here, son.' they said. 'Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men.'

"Mother Gue", I says, "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world, and by God, I was right! Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline."
