Digging in Joe Kent's holster box last week for a Clark cross draw -- more on that later -- we found this floral carved Colorado Saddlery holster marked Combat 4 and 198x with the last digit over-stamped and indecipherable by me.

Red suggested that "Combat 4" would have been hand written with a stylus while the leather was damp for the other stamping.

The holster was surprising difficult to photograph, and we didn't have time to experiment. The color is a little off.

And ... the suggested threads below gave me more information.

Red provided a catalog page that shows the holster as the model 1981, and there's this explanation of the model code. "Combat 4" would seem to designate a 4 inch barreled S&W Combat Magnum.

... From looking around online, I think I may have figured out some of Colorado Saddlery's numbering system. It looks like if the first 2 numbers are "17" the holster will be plain, if "18" the holster will be basketweaved, and if "19" it will be floral carved. I assume that the last 2 numbers are the style. ...:
