thanks. its a birdcage. i think the 3 pronger was gone by the late 60's??

i saw a 1964 sp1 locally on armslist awhile back but didnt have the cash.

That’s a nice pair! Colt went away from the 3-prong around 1969-70 so the majority of SP1s have the A1 birdcage (SP-1 was produced until 1984).

Nice display. Have a 67 SP1 slick side. Not to srtart a flaming war, but in my time in the USMC ‘69-71, never used a F/A. Was taught all you will do is jam it tighter! Not any difficulties with the A1s or any civilian model over the years and I’ve burned many pounds of gunpowder and lead through them!

the F/A was implemented at the army's insistence and against eugene stoner's advice.

u.s. air force M16s did not have a F/A

Love the SP1 which was my first center fire rifle back in 1979.
I still shoot that old Colt SP1 with 1/12 rifling and thin barrel better than my A2 HB.

I bought two new. A rifle and a carbine. Both have been shot very little. I like that they are so light, I put round hand guards on the rifle to match the carbine.

I have a carbine also that I bought in the early 80's. When you handle em it's surprising how far they've strayed from the original. It's light as a feather.
