Hi Guys,
I have never lettered a Colt.
Can someone give me the Phone number and address, please?
Does anyone know the price structure?
I have acquired a 1st year 38 Super that I might have lettered.
Thanks!

They are expensive but at least they're slow. My last batch took nine months to arrive.

I called two weeks ago and ordered one on a Pre War Official Police. She said 100 working days, maybe more. $75 for this one. Seems the older they are the more the letter costs.

They are slow so you'll pay extra for the expedited service.

That's one of the reasons that I stopped collecting percussion Colts!

Just to show how things change, the first Colt letters that I ever requested were in 1961. I sent in $4.00 ($2.00/gun) for letters on two first generation Single Action Armies that belonged to each of my grandfathers. At the end of the letter, there was a post script from the Colt Historian. He regretted that, due to the increased requests, he would have to charge $3.00 per gun in the future.

I find that little bit of history recorded on the letters as interesting as the data on the guns.

Bob, I can recall cussing out Wagner, Colt's Historian, at the time 'cause he was ripping off us collector's by charging $2, and the $3 for a letter. My argument was that S&W letters, Winchester, Sharps, etc. were free at that time, so why couldn't a 2nd rate gun maker , like Colt, do the same? My arguments were not persuasive enuff however, but he did shift the job to Marty Huber and Marty earned his money, as he would go to great lengths to research Colts I requested letters on, and look thru piles of work orders & invoices to pin down extra details like engraver's names and whether gold inlay was factory work, etc. His letters made me a lot of money on special Colt's that other collector's/dealers were trying to tell me had after market embellishments, etc. Ed.

Howdy

I had a SAA lettered a few years ago. Standard price for a SAA letter was $100. Took about 9 months before I got it, but it did come on real nice, fancy parchment paper, not the cheap copier paper Roy sends his on.

I have bunches of Colts, but have only lettered the one SAA. It just ain't worth it to me for a run of the mill Police Positive Special, or an Official Police.

$30 for a Smith letter is a terrific bargain, but don't tell Roy I said so.
