I have a Python about 90% that I installed NOS Eliason sights on. Thailand smooth wood stocks with matching grain on the bottom. Any idea of value? I’m thinking $2000
The four inch Python in nickel is a desirable version, the Thai grips are bringing the value down for about the $300 to 350 that a pair of nice original grips cost.
I think $2,000 is spot on in a private sale.
To me, what makes a Python feel good i the hand are those close tight checkered Colt grips, and that wide spur hammer. To me, without the original grips (in good shape) they just dont look or feel right.
I cannot at all agree with that but then, despite having a rather large collection or accumulation of classic firearms, I am more of a shooter than a collector. Back when the Colt Python was a utility revolver and not a collectible, the Colt grips were usually the first thing that were changed out. I personally find the original grips cosmetically pleasing but an ergonomical disaster!
Hence, I used Nills on my Python when I used to shoot it seriously.

Of course, my son, whom I gave the gun preferred the checkered grips, too.

Would it also mean that the four incher that I got to replace the gun that I gave to my son is not desirable? Those grips are real buffalo horn but of course, I have Colt OEM target and service grips in my parts box somewhere.

Nill grips are great but beyond the price most are willing to pay
I always wanted a python , but didn't have the $$$ . I recently came across an Old Model Trooper 357 . It's built on the python frame , same internals but has a plain barrel and not quite so much of a finish . The lock up and timing was perfect , it showed signs of very little use , if any . So , I bought it . It shoots well but I can't say it's more accurate than my 686 or my 681 or my 27 or my fiance's 586 . I'm glad now that I didn't spend a lot of $$ buying a python . My OM trooper is just fine and I pd less than $500 . My .02 cts worth . Regards, Paul
