Doing a little pre-show dealing yesterday before the Big Reno Show starts, I picked up this nice 4” nickel Python. Negotiating started at $3800 and ended at $2100. Has the usual light surface scratches, but still in very nice condition, with what appears to be a reproduction box and docs.

Nice gun! I picked up its twin about 20 years ago, complete with the original box and papers. I did not pay a ridiculous price for it then, thank the good Lord! It's a vintage 1981 example. I think I fired six rounds from it before tucking it away.

That's a considerable price drop, IMO. Did he think he had it overpriced to begin with, hoping someone would bite? Or are you that good?

After showing him the recent sales on GB, I explained to him the Python market went soft after Colt started making the new Python, which could be had for $1300 and that his box was a reproduction. It didn’t take me long to reach $2100.

I expect the reintroduction of the Colt Python will create two distinct markets for the snake. The collector market, which will focus on high condition, LNIB, and NIB pre-redesign Pythons and the shooter market, which will focus primarily on the new Pythons and any older Pythons in shooter grade condition.

It already has happened. Production of the new Pythons have reached demand and new guns have been being put on sale at lower than MSRP. To be fair...the whole market is down and it could also be a reflection of that.

Original Python values are holding their own but have still moderated some from several years ago when prices for most Colt snake guns was were going crazy. Prices for original Anacondas have seen the same thing occur.

Appears to be an '81/'82 time frame. The era when Colt about abandoned the traditional nickel finish in favor the E-nickel & stainless.

Nickel and electroless nickel (Coltguard...Royal Coltguard on a Python)...ran as options concurrently in the late '70s and early '80s. When Colt started producing handguns in stainless steel both other options were discontinued but remained available for some time for refinishing.

Well, I hope it's OK to blend the Python postings with Reno show postings -

I picked up this 1976 made Python a few weeks back, in CA of all places. $1,800.00 and it carries the Elliason rear with target type fron t sight. Has what are called transitional stocks, not the usual "half moon" of earlier nor straight line checkering found on most of that era.



Re the Reno Show - I've never had a bad day at a gun show, but things have changed over the +20 years I've attended. Lou Fascio no longer owns it, and it seems they may soon be getting to one room only. Saw a few new vendors and managed to make a few buys.


An Astra 400 in 9mm Largo. Already reload for it, bought it "just because" and the price was right.



A Western Field branded Noble 33 with an old Mossberg Model 4 scope and side mount.



Since I drive in from CA I always stop at Willey Bros and found a Manurhin made Walther PPk/s in 380 ACP. Manurhin made these in what they called Durgard finish that can be mistaken for stainless steel or hard chrome.


Maybe it's because I like the drive or am out of CA - true, maybe not quite like Hilton or GSR days - I hope the new show promoters do well.
