Acid(s) won't touch gold, especially 24k. But they will pit the steel underneath it if it can find the tiniest of breaks in the plating to attack the steel.
Vinegar (acidic acid) is pretty safe to use and experiment with to age steel. Don't do like a customer once did and try and remove the gold plating from the small parts of a Colt SAA 125th Annv. Model w/a nitric acid bath.
Gold plating (and silver) is soft and easily worn. On small parts like you have there it can be gone in a few seconds by swiping the parts on a rotating fine wire wheel.
It'll remove any copper flash plate underneath also and leave a bare steel surface that's somewhat matte finished. But a little polishing w/ 600 brings them right back.
Use a 'fine' wire wheel,,no need for anything coarse. It'll come right off easily.
The gold and copper will deposit themselves onto the wires of the wirewheel during the process,,so don't use a wheel that's set aside for any other special finishing jobs.
Most any soft metal will do that,,aluminum included.
The gold and copper can be deposited right back onto another steel surface that you wire wheel with it. It'll show up as a hazy shadow of gold and copper under the bluing on the new items.
Just a general purpose, rust removing wire wheel mounted on a grinder works well.
Then re-blue the small parts.
