I agree, If you're a competition shooter and plan on putting thousands of rounds downrange, I'd opt for something more durable. I've never heard of the collet bushing breaking under normal (meaning occasional shooting) use.

I had heard that about the bushing before the internet, at least before we had it out here. Have use Ed's stuff before and got along great with it. I do all my own 'smithing' and have for years. No problem fitting such an item.

More on the series'70

I neglected to mention in the above -- I have a conversion kit I picked up years ago but never got around to using. A couple years ago I tried it on the Series '70. well, after I got some ammo bugs ironed out it shot better than the Ace I gave my son some years back for his 14th birthday. The ammo problem wasn't new, but unknown to me. Don't use target or standard ammo. Higher velocity is required to help keep lead from building up behind the floting chamber, which will lock it up tighter than Dicks hatband. This problem goes back to the beginning, before the higher velocity stuff came on the market.

I've got a 1950(birth year) gov't model that I believe is unfired. box is a little ragged but the gun is perfect. I think about shooting it, but haven't brought myself to "pull the trigger" yet. I've had over 25 years. lee

Nice that you put her to use. I've still got the one I bought new back in 1982. Have only put about 150 rounds through it, I think I should take it to the range next time.

So what was the price on that invoice back in '82 ?

I've had this Gold Cup for over 30 years, and put many rounds through it. It has been fairly extensively worked over by a couple of 'Smiths.

So what was the price on that invoice back in '82 ?

$399. Was making about $10 an hour then so about a week and a half's take home pay for me. I remember the shop had a Gold Cup too but I didn't want to spend the extra money, seems to me it was $100-$150 more.

I have a Ciener conversion unit for mine, works great, saves on ammo costs. I installed the flat mainspring housing on mine, feels better to me.

Of all of my 45acp's, this is my only 70 series. Of course the grips give it away if you know what you're looking at.

Here is my LNIB Series 70 Colt Combat Government. They were only made for a short time. The grips on it now were made by Nutmeg. The original grips were the wrap around Pachmayr style. I still have the box, original grips, and paperwork.

I love old Smiths but truly love old Colts as well. I carried a Swenson Gov't model for almost 40 years. When I retired I built myself a carry Commander. Bought it used and it was ugly. Satin nickel and rattled like an old pickup truck. Much better now.
