COLT WOODSMAN, SCUBA MODEL

Unless you want to keep that way, an electrolysis batch is a simple and cheap method for getting rid of most of that rust.

It has been used to improved the condition of many rusted guns, the folks who explore battlefields with metal detectors tend to use this a lot on the stuff they found.

All you need is a plastic container, couple of wires and a battery charger. Internet is full of information about how to make one of these.

You might want to give it a try and see how it looks after a couple hours, I´ve done this myself and the results were really amazing.

Of course I´m not saying it will look like NIB :D, but at least it will show the real metal surface underneath all that rust.

New Departure

I am having a problem believing the Elvis part of the story simply because I already own Elvis 3rd series Woodsman Sport and I got it direct from the King himself (actually I traded him a life time supply of peanut butter and banana's).

On the OP's miraculous "find" I'm also guessing early Target version as the Woodsman (1933 to 1977) had the mag release on the butt for 1st series (1933 - 1948) but had black plastic grips, 2nd series (1948 - 1955) also had black plastic grips and mag release was on left side frame. 3rd series put the mag release back on butt, and changed grips to checkered walnut with thumb rest. The dash S s/n suffix started in 1955, dropped in 1969 to end of production in 1977.

To my knowledge all 3rd series had the Colt Accro adjustable rear sight, and ramp/blade front.

Of course, that river may have slightly worn down all the sights and it seems to have done a number on what look like "wooden" grips (or the remains thereof), but I'm guessing not a Woodsman.

I can't quite make out the serial number....do you suppose you could post some better pics????:D;)

PM me if you want to set up a "before" and "after" display of your restorative powers.

It is not a first series target, as the frame is 2nd challenger/3rd huntsman/targetsman. Also, second series did not have black plastic, but brown plastic or coltswood. No tapered barrel on the scuba, so that leaves out Woodsman(as does lack of hold-back lever). Bottom mag catch(instead of mag release), and no thumbrest says late 3rd huntsman to me.....

Someones sphincter just puckered knowing this gun was found. Good time to put Kroil to the ultimate test.

Long sad tale

Around 1950, I bought a "Slab sided" 6" colt Woodsman for the wife of a lifelong friend, a MD. Doctor. She gave it to him as a birthday present. While on a canoe trip, on a stream about 3' deep, by 35' wide, he upset the canoe, and lost the woodsman in the water. Later he and I went back to the spot, where he lost the woodsman, and we spent hours, diving for that woodsman, in cold, fast running water. needless to say, we never recovered it. He replaced it with another one like it, but always mourned the loss of the first one until the day he died. If one went back to that location with a, now available, metal detector, it could probably be found. I don't know, if after 68 years under water anything would remain, and at 86 years of age I couldn't swim, and dive, but, I sure would like to know. Pardon the long winded, true story.

My first guess turned out correct (I think, lol) but in my detective work I learned the early Huntsman had mag release like challenger. Scuba has regular 3rd series release. Found this on Bob Rayburn's site explaining difference. Excellent site for all things Colt Woodsman! colt22.com
