...A poor abandoned pup that was seldom ever fed
Then one day we were walking through the pound
And our hearts were swept away by this little coonhound

Sorry for the poor attempt at satirical song writing, but it does tell our story.

You know we really aren’t dog snobs, but the 7 dogs we’ve had since we were married (29 years) have been large purebreds. 3 Bernese Mtn. Dogs, a Great Pyrenees, an English and a Gordon Setter and our current Great Dane “Boo”. All amazing dogs who enriched our lives immeasurably. Sadly, only Boo remains with us.

Seems like there are always long waiting lists for these high end puppies and paid dearly for them. That’s a shame because there are a ton of great rescue dogs ready for adoption at any local shelter. Some of these are kill shelters where their occupants have a clock ticking for adoption.

We have a local shelter that is great. They are devoted to finding good homes for their dogs and cats. We got a cat there a few years back.

We decided it was time for Boo to have a companion. We also felt like it was time to rescue a dog. Enter “Captain” the 6 month old+/- coonhound mix. He and his equally handsome and well behaved litter mate were in the shelter when we began our search. We almost took them both, but I’m sure the other will find a great home. He’s a real keeper too. We knew the name “Captain” wasn’t going to work for this little hound and the name “Jed” seems to fit him well.

Jed got to meet Boo on the grounds of the shelter Wednesday. They hit it off very well. A waning case of kennel cough kept us from totally letting them interact much at home until today. Although Boo has been vaccinated and Jed’s through with his antibiotics.

I wanted to get Jed out of the shelter on Wednesday because they had 63 rescue dogs coming from an out-of-state kill shelter. I didn’t want to subject him to an entirely new batch of issues that may be showing up with them.

So this is Jed. He’s a cute little cuss. He is crate trained, sleeps through the night and is pretty much house broken....only one “pee accident” in 4 days and that was probably our fault! He loves to play fetch with a ball and just spend time with his forever family. He’s great on a leash and constantly looks over his shoulder to make sure we are still there for him. He hasn't officially met the cat yet. The cat handle's Boo pretty well, so this little guy shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

We are converting him to a raw diet. That’s been a little bit of a challenge, but in the long run is worth it to the dog. We started him on chicken. That was the hard food for Boo to warm up to as well. He's catching on.

Sorry, not sure why picture #1 flipped 90*?

Good on you. I love my rescue too although he is getting "towards the end of his life spectrum" as the vet puts it. Otis usually gets up to ear-poop and bark. Other than that h'e pretty much a napper :D

God Bless all of you who rescue our four-footed friends. Never in their lives will they need the help more that you can give them than when they are in the shelter awaiting their fate-whatever it may be. The thankfulness that they show when you take them away to a new, loving home is something that you can count on for the rest of their and your lives. And the joy that they will bring you is immeasurable in value, as it is love given wholly and completely without thought to what is in it for them. If you haven't experienced the satisfaction of rescuing a dog or cat yet, you need to try it on, as it is more rewarding than I can express to you. They will love you, and God will Bless you for doing so.

That one has the makin's of a real fine dog, Rick. Congratulations on your new pup and good on y'all for making him part of the Koz menagerie.

What a great face! No wonder you couldn't resist the little character.

I need to order one of the T-shirts that says "RESCUED Is My Favorite Breed".

My little Moose had a slight limp from hip surgery--must have been hit by a car and patched up--and was estimated to be about six years old. Because of his age and the hip, he was a pretty certain candidate to be gassed. Then he jumped on my lap, licked my face madly while his ridiculous tail impersonated the tail rotor of a helicopter, and stuck the coldest nose south of Fairbanks in my ear.

I couldn't let such a gem be put down, and so he rescued me. He knew a complete pushover when he saw one, and I soon took home the first dog I'd had in thirty years.

Good for you and Mrs. Koz!

Jed looks to be a lot of fun! And the song was more than tolerable. How much does Boo weigh?

A few pictures from our trip to the park today. Jed is a great little guy!
