Google will turn up numerous media stories. A company is raising funds for a gasoline fueled personal flamethrower with a range of 25 feet. Cost is $700.

Legal in, depending on source, 48 or 49 states.

I have a large propane fueled model myself. It has a shorter range, but runs off bbq tanks and sounds like a jet engine when you get it going all the way. I used it a lot in SC. Burned weeds out of ditches and destroyed fire ant mounds. I haven't bought a new propane tank here.

I bought mine off Amazon for much less, they sell for $50 to $100.

Media reports find the Xm42 frightening. I just wonder if it is really that much better.

In either case....for outdoor use only.

I have a propane weed burner. Runs off a bulk tank, will shoot a flame about 8 or 10 feet out and about a foot in diameter.

Never considered other uses for it. Now you've got me thinking.

Thats a bit on the extreme side--just to keep mosquitos at bay. :D But then again, nobody has mosquitos as big as the ones in Texas. This flamethrower just might work.:D

I can "see" it now. ""Bank robbed by suspect wielding a flamthrower. Consider suspect Armed and dangerous.""

I started a reply that included a rather witty reference (in my mind, at least) to a well known comedian and possible model names of the aforementioned device.

However, before pushing that button, I thought better of it.

While I have previously been chastised here, I have never been given a time out, or (obviously) banned. I would like to keep it that way. ;)

FWIW -- Grew up in MN, lived in TX. TX mosquitos are NOT bigger, nor meaner. MN mosquitos travel in flocks, attack en masse, and are generally a public menace. I'm thinking the XM42 would be actually useful for that. 'Course, the ensuing forest fires would be epic, but :D

My great big can of aerosol brake cleaner with the extension tube will shoot a nice flame about 4 feet. Perfect for pesky wasps that think they are so tough and buzz around your head just to annoy you. One quick blast and their wings are gone and they are laying on the garage floor in the fetal position smoldering!

Here in The upper peninsular our skeeters are not only big but they are smart. They attack in formation, and use the black flies as a distraction. They have been know to carry away a grown man, One skeeter gabs you under the arm and the other grab your feet. Be careful not to fall a sleep after drinking a few you could wake up a couple quarts low and surrounded by past out skeeters.

Aquanet and a cheap bic lighter probably works just as well for a lot less money...

I dont know about that. When I still in LE for the State of Texas--we had skeeters the size of Ptarydactyls SP? :D I averaged the lossof two pints of blood per shift.;)
