COMPARRING CANNED SOUP

My theory is if I can make it then why buy it. During the cooler months I always have beef stew or chili onhand. The only soup in the cupboard is Ramen and that isn't very filling unless mated with a grill cheese sandwich. The problem with canned soup is there is never any leftovers.

I find it more satisfying to eat something I made myself and even more so the next day.

Some of us are miserable cooks and hate cooking.

A can of Campbell's beef barley soup will ALWAYS be better than any filthy swill I throw together and ten times faster.

Are we discussing Campbell's standard or Chunky soups?

I now avoid canned soups for health reasons, but Chunky was pretty good by commercial standards.

It sounds like you guys are keeping Progresso in business.
The only Progresso soups that I like are the clam chowder and chicken noodle. But even then I prefer Campbell's Chunky of all flavors.

It's been a while since I've had Progresso soup, probably the minestrone (my go-to soup), and remember liking it. I'm not sure if I've ever had Campbell's.

My usual soup choice is Amy's Kitchen. I've yet to find one I hate, though some I like better than others. I've also tried Gardein's minestrone soup and it's really good, too.

I like Progresso soups. We buy Campbell's tomato soup and use milk instead of water and we always have it with cheese toast. I dump some Cheez its into my soup bowl and about 8 - 10 shakes of Tabasco.

We use the Better Than Bullion products to make broth then add meat, vegetables and noodles or rice.

A dashi soup base (dried bonito flakes) with red miso, udon noodles, bok choy and hard boiled eggs halved is really tasty.

The few times I've tried Progressive soups I have been totally disappointed. They had no flavor. I use Campbell's soup as bases for making stock or gravies. To me, the best soup is homemade.

My mom ate a lot of soup her last few years and she definitely preferred Progresso by far. She did have me get some of that microwave cup of tomato soup by Campbells, but that was basically for emergencies when I couldn't get over there for whatever reason. Her favorite Progresso soup was Chicken noodle, with Chicken vegetable close behind. I can't really say I like soup myself at all. Closest I come is the beef Rice-A-Roni soup mix to let the rice suck up.

Homemade is best................... Saturdays from now till the end of March or April is pot of soup day........ always make 2-3 extra qts.

Sometimes I'll use a canned soup as a starter kit if time is short...... add a can of clams to clam chowder, or some frozen okra and sausage or shrimp to a couple cans of Aldi's gumbo. Aldi's soups tend to be above average quality IMO

But this thread got me thinking about some Grilled Cheese & ham with Campbell's Tomato soup! Add some Breadworks fresh baked bread and... you're GTG

To another's comments made about eating out......it's getting more and more expensive and the quality isn't what it use to be...... or I'm just getting older!!:D

I like the Campbells over Progresso mainly because more "low sodium" Campbells kinds are available. I'm referring to the large pop top cans. I like to doctor the chicken soup with extra egg noodles and chicken pieces. When the stuff is on sale it's $1.00-$1.25 a can and I buy enough to last me all winter.

I prefer Progresso to Campbell most of the time, but I do find that they Chicken pieces in the Progresso chicken soups seem more like squares of processed meat. I do Doctor Up any soup that I take out of a can and prefer home made. Especially true of Clam Chowder and Cream Soups as pointed out. I grew up used to Maine style Red Clam Chowder where you had a hard time finding anything but the clams!

I'm not much on soups, my mom thought that she knew how to make soup when I was a kid and she was wrong so I never any soup that I wanted to try. My wife of 40 years started buying "Idahoan Premium Steakhouse Loaded Potato soup" and I love the stuff. Only takes a few minutes to prepare and the cost is about two dollars a package and that is more than enough for us.
She will sometimes add chunks of ham or left over taco meat and that makes it even better.

It seems like every time I take the family out to eat I spend over 100 bucks and then I think about how I can eat some Ramen Noodle soup for about 25 cents. Mix in some canned chicken and maybe steam some fresh green beans or Broccoli in the Pampered Chef microwave steamer and you have a pretty good, cheap, and healthy meal. If I had all the money I spent on expensive meals I'd be retired on my own island.

100 bucks?!
How many are in your family?

The original Campbell soups are mostly very high in salt content.
Only one I can eat as soup is the Tomato, made with milk.
Cream of mushroom gets used in tuna & noodles
Chicken Gumbo in sloppy joes.

Any other soup is homemade.
Now I made myself hungry for potato soup.
