Can anyone recommend a holder for competing in ICORE or USPSA with this revolver? For a gun labeled "competitor" it's a surprisingly difficult gun to compete with.

I've been using a Safariland open front competition rig for many years. It fits both my .44 and .357 Competitors, I use it for all my guns in all matches I attend, except for carry gun matches. It works with or without optics too. I attempted to get a model number off from it for you, but it's worn off.

Check out the offerings from Double Alpha. I've used the one shown for my 627-4 PC and currently for my 929.

Adios,

I've also been looking for an IDPA-ish holster for my 5" 625, and there's not much out there.

Safariland and Double -Alpha both appear to only have the skeleton barrel plug+ trigger guard USPSA style stuff at this point.

Comp-Tac still makes the open front for the 5" N frame, but they don't make it easy to find on their site. They also recently relocated, and their website seems to be having issues. I tried to order a holster and the order wouldn't go through. When I contacted them, they actually suggested ordering through Speed Beez.

I would like to find just a basic kydex holster with a closed front for the 5", but I haven't had much luck. I do want the ability to modify the rear to mount to a Safariland QLS...

Double-Alpha responded to my plea and recommended three of their holsters. I'll share what they sent below for anyone else looking for a holster. They're all race-holsters which seems to be only option aside from leather hunting holsters. I'll probably start with them.

Something like the Speed Beez pictured above would be a nice option, but as stated, they only go to 5". If I really want one, I wonder if I could cut that one and add an extension. It's not holding any weight so it would probably work.

Info from Double Alpha:

We have several different race holsters that will fit your 629. When asked gun type, you will need to select S&W N frame, this should be a direct fit to your guns….but may need fitting. Fitment is a simple process requiring only a Dremel tool and 15-20 minutes. Below is a link to our fitment video.

Our entry level holster is our Racer-X holster. If you would like to add the muzzle support a hole must be drilled and tapped, to accept the muzzle support. It is a very affordable solution.

Our Alpha X is our Premium holster. It is basically the Race Master on steroids, the muzzle support will also thread directly into the holster, and you can purchase additional inserts. The height/cant/angle adjustments are much more positive on this holster, it is worth the extra $25.

The FLEX is our new offering and has been well received. I personally think it is the BEST fit for revolvers. You will need the A-Type insert. I highly recommend the muzzle support/revolver adaptor/extension rod. This is recommended for guns with round trigger guards, the extension rod is a much for revolver with barrel lengths over 5.5”.

I make a competition holster mod that goes with a Hogue Power Speed holster. It's a very secure but fast holster. With my mod, it can be adjusted to fit any S&W revo from 4" barrel to 8-3/8" barrel in seconds. It can be used for most matches, not including IDPA. It is $175 plus shipping for the complete assembly, or $75 plus shipping for just the adapter mod if you already have a Hogue Power Speed holster. You can see a picture of it on our website below.

Here are a couple of pics showing that it works with everything from stock to highly customized.

This is a 5" M29 44 Auto Mag caliber in electroless nickel. It has a cut down Wichita PPC Rib sight, a custom slab sided Douglas 44 barrel with 2 compensator ports, a steel underlug, and DA only action job.
