Compoments-Your thoughts?

Strange, I don't remember that happening when I ordered both from Larry a couple months ago. And gas/generators during a storm ain't shootin stuff!!!!!!!!! I remember driving a U-Haul from Ohio to SC for my sister and parents after Hugo! Should've been armed ;)

Has always been that way. Their zoning does not allow both in the same warehouse. Put primers and powder in you cart and see what you get. Read the shipping charges on bottom

This is from my cart. I case primers 1 jug of powder.

Standard Ground $11.99 Est. Delivery: 7/8/2014

  • Powder Shipping: $9.99
  • HazMat Fee: $57.00

Eeeeeks!

And I discovered WHY I don't recall this, ... I didn't order the stuff from Larry :o

re: "Do not wait until you are out of supplies to buy more. Buy them when you see them even if you do not need them."

as any prudent reloader should come to realize, as our own 'needs curve' does not always match the 'supply available side' curve

Its starting to get better, just don't buy at crazy high prices, these are the scum that buy and resell at a higher price.

If nothing else this powder situation got me to use powders I could find instead of what I had been using with some good results. I now prefer WST to W231 and discovered Accurate #9 works pretty damn good in hot .357 mags!

A local shop is running a "sale" price this week of $19.99/lb on both CFE Pistol and Titegroup(and they have a whole lot of each on hand)-limit 1 lb per person per day.

I don't use Titegroup, but couldn't resist picking up a pound when I was in there today. I'm probably going to go back tomorrow and get a pound of CFE Pistol as I've used it, like it, and the price is too good to pass up.

You are very fortunate. Here in the Tucson area, people are too polite to just laugh when I ask about pistol powder, but it is hard for them to keep a straight face.

I promised SWMBO that I would start hand loading 38 special so that I could build her some "fun to shoot" lighter loads for her snubby. "Ain't happening." No luck on powder locally, even from my favorite, never lets me down, local provider. :o

My thoughts are based on observations of the past 20 years or so. Like fishing-take what you like and throw the rest back.

Right now is the quiet time to be saving like the grasshopper. Wholesalers are dumping AR15 parts and completed rifles at historically low prices. Primers and Powder are showing back up in reasonable amounts. Once hard to find ammo in .223, 9mm and other calibers are not only available but being discounted.

After the completion of the midterm elections in November there can be little more damage done in implementing some laws and restrictions that have not been seen since Clinton. Remember cheap AK imports and Chinese ammo? Remember how just one executive order closed that door?

Without going on a political rant, I believe now is the time to invest and stock up for the long winter ahead. Powder, Brass, Primers and loaded ammo will be want most smart ants need to be gathering.

Amen to that. If you are not stocking up today please keep your whining to yourself in the future. If past shortages and this present shortage hasn't taught you to be prepared then you are beyond help.

I highly suggest that everyone sit down and draw up a monthly purchase plan for ammo, reloading supplies, parts, mags and firearms and start working your plan otherwise you will be watching instead of participating.

At $48 a bag there is a LOT of lead shot in the Nevada area!!
Wads and primers also. Hulls have always been a little tough to find but are out there.

Primers are out there but might not be the brand that you like
and you may have to wait two months for them but it is doable.

I agree that there are pistol and rifle bullets out there..........
you just have to adjust to the amount of money in your wallet.
Sierra rifle bullets are a bit high right now !! Almost cheaper
to shoot Bergers or Noslers..........

Powder is the only hard item but.....................
I got lucky yesterday. Pictures to soon follow on arrival. :D

Can't wait to hear about your new find! Hope its the ever elusive W231 or HP-38. Just praying for a recent siting of either of these powders.

Went to my LGS today as I have been laying around the house with a bad lower back.

He had primers so I Hoarded 2 boxes (2k) of Win SPMag as I do not have many of them.(relatively):D I left 2 cases for the other folks.;)

Bought a pocket gun also in a monster 32 ACP  LNIB Beretta TomCat (ya ya the frames may crack) Always liked that flip up barrel maybe I can get my Wife shooting:rolleyes:

I have a bunch of collector 32's but wanted one to shoot, Really want a CZ but have not be able to score one in 32 only 380

Novalty;

The lady on the other end of the phone told me that it will be a
while until any Winchester pistol powder comes out.

She told me they had a mess up with the powder and it was "BAD" !!
I don't know if it had to all be disposed of or if they are trying to salvage it ?

If you have w231 etc, don't spill any !!

I'm on Ohio and have seen the local news about how gun purchases are setting records. Something like more purchased in Q4 2013 than all of 2011. CCW permits are setting records as well. I bought my first handgun last year as well and made a schedule where I would stop in once a month for ammo. Well about May the LGS ran out of ammo and Cabelas opened their new store so I stopped in there and they ran out too. Cabelas was closet so I started stopping in there more often and they never had any ammo so I walked over to the reloading isle and bought a tumbler and started prepping the few cases I had fired. Found some more for sale and prepped those. Then one day they had primers in stock, another day bullets, another day some powder.
There are so many just like myself who just started that all the stock is getting bought as fast as it comes in.

"Tru dat!" ;)

I have been loading 30-06 to shoot in my Garand for quite some time and have some component inventory.

Recently, I reluctantly bought a set of 38 Special dies to help feed our revolvers.

In the past, pistol ammunition was readily enough available that loading for the "picky eater" Garand was all that appealed to me and I purchased our pistol ammo, always watching for bargains.

Lately, there have been NO bargains for pistol rounds.

We have a fair inventory of .45 ACP from "the good old days" to feed the 1911's. But, .38 Special . . . not so much.

Yeah, I am now "part of the problem" too. :o

And I have to admit that I'm somewhat hoarding what I can find because I haven't see another bottle of tightgroup in a year so I'm buying up anything I find to make sure I have load data for anything and everything. So yea, I'm grabbing whatever I can because of the shortage which in turn is making the shortage worse.

Slightly different angle on this;

Think of all the complexity - all the different powders, primers, etc. that the industry supplies. If this were, say, the U.S. military they could settle on two calibers (.223 & 9mm) precisely two types of bullets and two powders. They could enter huge, long term supply contracts for components, and then, perhaps, contract with a third party to assemble and deliver them in vast quantities. Anybody approaching it that way could ensure long term supply and (well, maybe not with the Gov't...) lower prices per round.

Compare that to what we handloaders have to deal with; 100 different powders, 100's of different bullets (lead, plated, jacketed, different weights, LSWC to XTPHP) a dozen different primers in varying degrees of hardness, etc., etc., etc.

Any 'glitches', 'hoarding' or whatever in the system and VOILA - 'shortages'. You'd think we, or the 'industrial system' or whatever would be 'smarter' than that and could deal with all the complexity - right?. Well, apparently, it's not.

Maybe its just a function of complexity?

The group of seven shooters I run with, have really had little issue the past 2 years. We were ALL smart enough, or OLD enough to have been reasonably stocked up anyway.

We are aware of what components , the others are seeking. When we travel and hit stores in other towns or states....we keep enough cash or open credit card space....to strike when we do find items we are looking for.

I have had Berger 6.5 mm 130 VLD's and 175 gr .308" BT's on back order from four different supplies. Seems I get 200-500 bullets every month or six weeks. So even tough to find bullets ARE available..EVENTUALLY.

I have posted an efficient way to finding pistol powders a dozen times or more; Large, State or Regional TRAP or SKEET shoots. Always someone there selling components for the shotgun shooters.. At times there are multiple vendors and one can negotiate prices. They deal in eight pounders as shotgun loaders use LARGE amounts of powder and buy in bulk.

Seems there are always jugs of Red Dot,Green Dot, Super Target, Clays...ALL of them very usable pistol powders.

What about bullet CASTING? Yeah, another facet of the hobby with more gear. But you can cast whatever you need versus being at the mercy of supply and demand.

I think many waste more time complaining when they could use their heads and find what they need and move on.
