This Sunday I'm planning on taking the Concealed Carry course for the State of Illinois. Being a Veteran, I only have to complete the second day of the 2 day course. I'll update after I complete the course. Anyone in North Central Illinois interested in more info on the site, PM me. I'll try not to shoot myself in the eye!

I suppose that these courses will be required statewide for a CCW permit/license or whatever Illinois calls their new CCW or CCH or CCDW. Is this what is now going on there for the process to begin, would love to hear more about how it goes in the last state in the union not to have reasonable carry laws that are statewide and not county by county or city by city!

I am taking the class tomorrow in Springfield. I am looking forward to it, but can't decide what gun to fire. Torn between the 9mm Sig or 45 Gold Cup.

As a veteran of more than 22 years active duty military I have the right to ask:

What does being a "veteran" have to do with obtaining a permit to carry concealed weapons????

In all my years of service I never fired a handgun in the line of duty; only fired a long gun on the range; and have absolutely no experience in when to 'SHOOT.........DON'T SHOOT'.

I see a few more pistoleros have taken the course.

The course I went to was given by SAFE Gun Permits | Illinois, Utah and Florida Concealed Carry | Illinois Concealed Weapons. The course was held at a private range near Morris. The first day was concerned with weapons functioning and safety. I wasn't there because, being former military, a DD214 took care of the first day's requirement. The bulk of the second day was concerned with Illinois and Federal laws concerning concealed carry, fire arms ownership, fire arms and ammo purchase. Everyone was electronically finger printed. The receipt for the finger print cost had a number that will have to be entered on the State Police form that can be down loaded after 5, January, 2014. You will have to check the form closely because you will have to also enclose a picture of specific dimensions?? That cannot be take any earlier than 30 days before you send in your package. I asked about a time stamp......no one could answer. The last 4 hours were on the range. 2 range officers, 5 shooters shooting 10 practice rounds and 10 rounds at 5, 7 and 10 yards. Target was a large silhouette. The only thing that seemed to slow things down was the fact that there were a lot of weapons malfunctioning, poor ammo, old weapons etc. The range officers helped with the clearing process, but due to safety, it slowed the process down. You had to bring a holster that could be worn outside the waist but had to be covered by a coat. A few inside the waist band holsters were also used. Weapons were stored in the conference room, locked out and inside cases. Don't walk in with a firearm that isn't cased. Ammo was left in the cars. Police officer was one of the lecturers and was armed, no one else.

To qualify you had to put 70% of the rounds on target. After you qualified you were given a certificate that needed to be signed. Don't send in the original, send a copy. State Police will make their form available for download on or about 5 January, 2014. Read it very carefully, there may be added things!

Post Script...used my new plastic S&W Bodyguard .38 caliber, 5 rounds of 125grain ammo per load. Everything there from .22s to .45acp.

Reasonable carry laws? Like NJ's? Lol
There is no such thing as reasonable carry law, laws prohibit and there's no reason to prohibit constitutional rights.

Bad,

Put up a paper dinner plate for a target and shoot at it at 10 yards. That's what they were using to warm up.

Bad and sawlog,

Something else came to mind...the company that did the fingerprinting did not take personal checks. They took cash and credit cards only, so double check with the people that are giving the course about payment types. The State Police must have a data base that is made up of prints coming right off of their scanner because you have to enter the number you get from them onto the SP form.

Also, if you hold a Foid card, and commit some kind of offense that warrents that card is declared null and void, you will have to surrender the card and your weapons to the State Police. The police officer at the course accompanied State Police officers to six different homes to pick up firearms after the name of the Foid card owner was sent to their office with revocation orders attached. No reason for revocation was given. Have a good lawyer!

Don't mean to use up space on this site but things keep coming back that seem important. Good luck to both of you. Don't shoot yourselves in the eye!

Thanks for the "heads up"! My record is as clean as it gets.
And definitely good advice on lawyering up!

I know there are a lot of people that think there should be no requirement for exercising your 2nd Amendment right however, this is the same type of thing I saw at my CCW class and it's a little scary to see the skill level of some people that intend to carry a firearm. In my class, some people actually rented their gun, others had guns that they had trouble with and others just plain could not shoot. I was the only one in a class of 20 that did not have to go back and shoot more shots to qualify (and I'm not an expert marksman) and there was one person that the instructor just would not pass.

I does seem reasonable to me that some level of proficiency be proven before allowing someone to carry a firearm in public. If you want to keep it in the house, I can see favoring the 2nd Amendment right over any form of training/restriction. But to carry - I think showing that you can fire a few rounds and hit a silhouette is a reasonable restriction.

I might have changed but when I qualified in Tennessee we shot 16 rounds at 3, 7 and 15 yards at a large silhouette. You merely had to punch 33 out of 48 on the paper. All mine hit the paper but being nervous and firing my S&W M&P FS9mm for its first time was a bit much, I did hit the paper all 48 times and had a few bullseyes but as I was nervous I still was all over the place but at least most all were center mass!

Conceal Permit License

When Florida started issuing permits many years ago I got mine right away. I went to Sheriff Dept. for finger printing and I didnt have to take a course because I was in the military. The state mailed it to you after you were checked out by the FBI.
