My friend's son has just graduated from college and will be moving to the Dallas area to start his new job. He wants to know the procedure for getting a permit to carry his Beretta 92FS. I'm sure there is someone here who can answer this question.

It's about a 10 hour course with a written test, usually done in one day and then a 50 shot qualifying test. After that it's finger prints and about a 60 day wait for a background check and the license to come through.

In addition to what was said above, you have to be 21 and a resident of Texas for 6 months. You can take the class, complete the paperwork, and mail it in once you've been a resident for 6 months.
I would think it's a bit difficult to conceal carry a Beretta 92, for many anyway. To be clear, open carry is not allowed in Texas, just concealed carry.

you can hide just about anything, if i can hide a 3.5in s&w 27 in texas heat with cargo shorts and t shirt with an light overshirt... anything is poss just think about what your gonna wear, go see lobo gun leather he will fix you up unless you wanna pacl a dessert eagle 50cal

One need no longer be a TX resident for 6 months. The legiscritters left the 6 month language in, but there is no longer a technical residency requirement. A resident of any state can get a TX CHL, as long as he or she comes to TX to take the class and meets the other requirements. However, a new TX resident must show intent to remain here, like a contract to buy a house, a utility bill, apartment lease, etc. And if you are active duty military, you need only be 18 to get a TX CHL.

Thanks everyone. I'll get all this information to my friend's son, who also happens to be my godson. He wants a Beretta 92FS Inox, and his father and I are going to buy one for him as soon as he establishes residence in Texas and gets a Texas Drivers License. We had him look at and fire a bunch of different pistols. He felt the Beretta felt better in his hand. Also, his older brother carried a Beretta while he was in Iraq, and he recommended it to his brother.

I did tell my godson that Texas requires that all men have a single action revolver and a lever action rifle. The last man in Texas that didn't have these guns was forced to wear a dress and was exiled to New York City.

38-44hd45,
Seems these laws change faster than I thought. That being the case a person needs to put himself in the hands of a capable trainer whose job it is to keep up.

jag312,

Just curious, how is he going to conceal carry his Beretta?

again i wear cargo shorts ALOT here in texas during the summer and a colored t shirt with a unbottoned light shirt untucked over it, its light, covers either the 3.5in 27-1 or full size colt gold cup 45 i pack everyday just a thought

Speaking of open carry, has anyone heard whether or not that is going to go through? I know it was discussed a few months back

jag312,

The reason I ask is most guys have a hard time conceal carrying a gun as big and heavy as a Beretta 92. A shoulder holster under a jacket certainly works, but is that day to day dress for him in the summer in Texas? Even in the Air Force (OSI) we went to the Sig 228 for conceal carry because the M9 was too big. I've got to tell you those guys look silly in sports coats in the summer in Texas. IWB carry is certainly possible for 1911s, and more compact autos such as the Sig 228, Glock 19/26, etc. Lots of factors to consider.

donniedee,

Last I heard the open carry thing here in TX isn't getting much traction. I got a briefing on it a few weeks ago at a 9/12 project meeting. Most of the "experts" say open carry is the same as, and I quote, "a tattoo on your forehead saying shoot me first." Personally, it's personal choice as far as I'm concerned.

I used a M9 as my first carry weapon. Crossbreed holster IWB, and never had an issue.

This seems quite common in Texas, as I also wear Cargo Shorts, and a Harbor Bay High Quality expensive Tee Shirt
and my concealed carry is a Charter Arms 3" Bulldog, leaving
my S&W 38 Spl in my vehicle. My CA is only slightly larger
than my 38 Spl, can use the same holster. I guess I am
not that familiar with the Beretta, but I did not think it was
any bigger than my CA. It is intentional unconcealment
that the guy needs to be concerned with. And I don't think
they have legalized any oncampus carry yet if he goes to
school.

moxie,

your right id rather be the SURPRISE to the bad guy rather than the guy with the iron in plain view, i think open attracts more problems than it prevents.... off duty i do not go a looking for trouble BUT theres nothing i couldnt walk into a 3.5in 27 loaded for bear would settle if need be... youll never know its a ridden on my hip till its time....

The open carry bill was never even brought to floor debate. It its dead for this session.

SB 321, regarding employer parking lots passed, and will become law unless Perry vetoes it (very unlikely.)

None of the various campus carry bills ever made it to a floor vote on their own, although the Senate passed its provisions as an amendment to another bill. The house stripped it back out, so it seems dead, too. There is the possibility that Perry could add campus carry to the special session, but I don't think it's going to happen.

I am in shorts and tee shirt 6 to 9 months a year. I usually carry my BT380 or my 442 in a pocket holster. Sometimes though I carry my 442 in a slide holster with my shirt over it, but not very often. I'm always worried that if I bend down or reach up for something my gun might flash and some nervous ninny will see it and freak out. I hope open carry gets pushed thru in the next legislative session so I can carry on my belt without worrying about my gun flashing.

I agree. A Beretta 92 will be difficult to conceal. I have been to Texas many times (Dallas, San Antonio, Brownsville, Corpus Christi), and I know that there are times when you have to dress for the weather and not for concealing a firearm. If my godson is anything like me and his father, the Beretta will not be the last gun he will own. I also had him try several other firearms, and he did like a Browning BDA380, which his father and I both own. When he goes through the training course, his instructor may suggest several other firearms to carry or an acceptable way of carrying the Beretta.

texasarmed,

The Beretta 92/M9 is quite a bit bigger and heavier than a Bulldog.

The Beretta is 34 ozs. vs. 22 oz. for the Bulldog. Also, 15 or so rounds of 9mm weigh about 50% more than 5 rounds of .44 Spl., adding even more depending on exact ammo used.

The Beretta is 8.5" long vs. 6.7" for the Bulldog.
