The way one carries is a personal choice. Each of us has his or her reasons justifying our decisions.
Having carried concealed for over 25 years and tried some alternate methods, I find myself most comfortable sticking with the KISS principle: same gun, same place, nearly all the time.
When I have to vary my chosen routine, it is with the same basic gun but a smaller version, concealed in the same place but a little “deeper”.
I carry a FS M&P AIWB ~85% of the time. The variation is a Shield in Thunderwear 15% of the time.
I find no problem concealing or accessing these locations, even one-handed. When I wear a winter coat, I leave it undone in the front and the warm wool shirt under it is my concealing garment. If I have to zip up the coat, mine has the double zipper that unzips from the bottom also. I unzip the bottom about 1/3 the way—which also makes it easier to move/sit—and can access the concealed secured gun easily, even while seated.
I have not found any useful advantage to carrying in a pocket, especially in a coat, jacket or vest. I suppose if I had to stay bundled up really tightly the idea of dropping a short barreled revolver in an outside pocket might seem attractive, but even in Utah winters I have not found this necessary.
I post this opinion only to help those considering coat carry to study it out thoroughly. I think there are many drawbacks. The challenges of waist mounted carry with a coat in belt mounted positions other than AIWB complicate the decision, but it is one more advantage to AIWB for consistent, secure, accessible, simple concealed carry.
I’m not trying to hijack the thread—just pointing out that carry decisions that complicate what you carry and how tend to increase complexity, require more training, and may actually put you at a disadvantage when you need your gun quickly.
