Concealed versus open carry

Not opposed to open carry in certain circumstances however:

Back in 1976 when I became a LEO the Department policy was that when working "plain clothes" or carrying off-duty your sidearm was to remain covered so as "to not unduly alarm the public".

This was taught as part of our basic LE training and department policy. I still adhere to that practice and think others should also.

I see nothing but disadvantages with open carry.

What am I missing ?
You're not missing anything. Concealed carry significantly increases your chances of using that darn pocket pistol. I mean, you're desperately hoping you look exactly like an unarmed person so that you'll be targeted, and then you can whip out your concealed carry gun and teach that *** a lesson he'll never forget. Then the mayor will praise your heroics on TV and you'll be the talk of the town.

No, concealed is more advantageous because it means chances are much higher that you'll get to kill someone.

open carry will only get you harrassed by police even if legal, and cause problems
with the public.y

So, is this your personal experience or just what you have heard happens local to you?

I have been OC here in E. WA for more than a few years now and yet have to be on the receiving end of "police harassment". Maybe they understand the law as well as those who open carry do, who would have thunk.

I normally carry concealed, but I see people open carrying quite often.

Just because they are open carrying I have no desire to "take them out first" or any such thing. I do believe that if someone is going to start something and they see someone has a firearm they will either wait until that person leaves or they will go somewhere else.

In my part of the world, I see someone open carrying a firearm at least 2 or 3 times a week. I would be willing to bet I come in contact with someone carrying concealed several times a day. Most people around here know this and I think that is why our crime rate is so low.

Suffice it to say that there are a significant number of people who agree with your assessment but also a significant number who strenuously disagree.

And dammit, they just found the thread.
