"Concealed Weapons Permit" Badge - Pros & Cons

Who says just because someone has one of those ignorant badges that they are "the good guy"? They're for sale to anyone and everyone goofy enough to buy it. It isn't limited to good guys.

I'm no LEO, but in my personal opinion, those wearing the badges are cop wannabes, just like Dog The Bounty Hunter.

There AREN'T any "pros".

1. I'm not a cop.
2. I don't want to be a cop.
3. I don't want people to think I'm a cop.

Any such item has no relevance to CCW in Ohio. If stopped by the police for an official purpose, displaying such a piece of kitsch does not meet my legal requirement to present my credentials to the LEO. It's the equivalent of showing him a dead parakeet.

That being the case, it serves NO useful purpose AT ALL, apart from enriching the seller to no benefit to me AT ALL.

In at least one state (New Mexico) they are specifically prohibited in the CCW statutes

I know a person in the neighborhood who has a self identity problem, its scary to watch his personality change with each different hat or shirt he dons.

Twenty year retired LEO, current DHS security contractor here.

Your attitude that a badge may have some utility in identifying you as a "good guy" in the first few seconds when the cops arrive is not completely unreasonable, but after that it makes you appear to have poor judgement and a wannabe mentality th a jury won't like.

And "poor judgement" is the last label you want people to hang around your neck after a shooting.

Holster your gun, make sure you called EMS (even if the guy is clearly dead it's a good idea to go to the hospital yourself to get checked out...you may have been hit and not know it...call your lawyer, and calm down).

And sit down and keep your hands empty and in plain sight. Shootings are nervous situations for everybody.

Plenty of cops don't even carry a badge because they don't want the holdup man to find it on them when they get robbed at the ATM. When they get pulled over for vehicular homicide and want the cop to let them go, they just pull their ID card out from way in the back of their wallet and show the officer who pulled them over. Likewise when the new BMW's are in and they want their 50% police discount, or when they have to drop it on the registrar at college so their kid can get free tuition.

But the badge that "Dog the Bounty Hunter" has is sooo cool.

Very bad idea all the way around.

I was a LEO for 36 years. I retired a year ago and haven't carried a badge since (although they gave me a really pretty one.) In my experience the only "good guys" at a shooting are those I know personally or are in a uniform like mine. Even plain clothes officers know they have to do exactly what the uniforms tell them.

I think perhaps a little sarcasm was intended.

Wrapped around a nice little nugget of useful information.

With maybe a soupcon of underlying bitterness that once in a while LEOs don't get quite as much respect as they deserve. Or sometimes even decent health insurance.

Former LOE - 9 Yrs in 70's. Just imagine if some other citizen calls 911 and says there is a wild cop or someone claiming to be a cop here with a gun. Lot of other potential. We are on a "concealed permit" site, keep it concealed, it ALL concealed, low profile, etc, so why have a badge. Most cops may laugh but the cop that is uptight anal by the booker, he may arrest you and you will likely go before a judge that will expect you to plead guilty to something since you are taking the time of his court! Don't do it, especially if it is shaped like what your local cops use.

One more thing, the guys selling them at a shop or a gun show, will tell you they are a good thing. Motivation = PROFIT ONLY!

I'm rethinking the whole badge thing now.

For GreginTN, as a former west TN cop, they do not like them in any way here in Jackson/Madison Co. from talking to a few of them. No logical reason to wear one. Just bling bling with lettering on it.

Here's a funny on this subject: A few years ago, I was a security guard at a high-rise office building. Late one night, a leg man for a P.I. showed up to video someone in relation to a case he was on.

Before we knew who he was, myself, two other guards and a peace officer working an extra job all approached this guy, who all you could see was the video camera being held above his dashboard.

Long story short, he flashed one of these stupid badges in a professional leather credential case.

After about five minutes of our gratuitous laughter AT him...he left highly embarrassed and in a big hurry.

MORAL: If someone is going to be that much of a dumb*** he should get elected to public office and get paid for it!

Best possible outcome--cop laughs at you.
Worst possible outcome---arrested and convicted for impersonating a police officer.

Two possible outcomes, yes, but how about "crooks seize you, get your gun, and shoot you." ?

That would be my concern.

The idea is exceptionally stupid.

Many years ago a group of us were at a dive-in theater. As the evening went on the car next to us kept getting rowdier and rowdier. Finally, one of my friends who was a volunteer fireman got fed up. He walked over to the other car, flashed his VFP badge quickly and said in a stern voice, "Look, I'm willing to overlook the smell of grass coming from this car but if you don't tone it down you'll force me to take action".

It was all we could do to keep from laughing as he walked back to the car but they did calm down. Did you have something like this in mind for your CCW badge?
