Confused!

I want to add an M&P9 to my collection and designate it as my SHTF gun. However, I would also like to use it for USPSA and IDPA. We don't have concealed carry here so that's not a concern.

Is this the right place to start?

I would add an Apex DCAEK and RAM to it. Probably would add some paint to the front sight as well. Fiber optics don't sit well with me for SHTF use.

Where I am confused is I hear people suggesting to buy the gun with a magazine disconnect. Why would I want this? I assume they're removing the magazine safety but it seems odd to go through this and not buy a gun without the disconnect in the first place.

I'm thinking of going with the 4.25" gun to start and then, if I'm liking it, adding a 5" Pro for targets and keep the 4.25" for SHTF.

Inputs/ideas?

I have 2 M&P 9mm. I shoot the pro model for IDPA and use full sized model as a home defense gun. I have had zero issues with them. I have night sights on the home gun and fiber optic on the IDPA. They are great guns and more people are going to then for IDPA. I have thousands of rounds in my Pro series and have had to replace the fiber optic twice until I learned to place a dot of super glue in the fillament to lock it in place. Neither of my M&P's have a magazine safety nor do they need one IMHO,

Some gun enthusiasts just abhor the "CAUTION-CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" warning on the slides of those that come with no magazine safety. Those that come with magazine safeties do not have the warning, so they remove the safety and don't have the warning on the slide.

Both my M&P's have the warning and I could careless.

Ah! I agree with you. This is a $500 "tool gun.". If this were a multi-thousand dollar custom 1911, I might feel
differently.

Magazine safeties are a pain in competition due to the extra step needed when you "unload and show clear" to your safety officer.

Keep in mind that according to IDPA rules it is illegal to disable any safety.
