Considering a New 629

Looking into getting a new Model 629, 6.5" barrel, 44 mag. Currently have Ruger GP100s and a Super Blackhawk Hunter.

My question is: Are the new Model 629s structurally strong enough to take a steady diet of 44 magnums without causing any issues? I have read that some of the older S&W 44 models do not hold up well with constant magnum loads.

I have a 629-6 3". Shoots great. I shoot 240 gr magnums all the time with some 300 gr thrown into the mix. Don't think you can go wrong.

what ever you do make sure you inspect it before you agree to take it home. I own many 686 and 629's and I use them but....the ^' I bought in Feb. of this year had a very loose cylinder release. but I kept it and I shoots great. so, then I bought the 5" NIB off of gun broker 3 weeks ago. didn't inspect it that well because all my S&W's have never had issues. took a look at the barrel and it looks like someone took a chisel to it. wouldn't care it was somewhere you couldn't see. S&W told me there was a 8 to 10 month turn around to fix it. So, I ordered another 5" off of gun broker and low and behold another huge ding in the top of the barrel just before the front sight. Sent it back. I wouldn't care if I made the marks, but a new $900 handgun should not looked like it was used as a hammer. I want to put those marks in there( and I usually do) not the manufacturer. (i'm done venting). As far as holding up...you wont be disappointed.

Well, that's not good. I have also bought some guns through the Internet during the past 6 months and have also been disappointed to see scratches on the finish when opening the box - they all went back to the factory for refinish or replacement.

I like to think I am done buying sight unseen over the Internet, but sometimes the local dealers just do not have the in-stock inventory for what you are looking for. Then you see them available on the Internet and you get tempted.

I live in the metro Phoenix area - lot of gun dealers around, but no one has a 6.5" model 629. So, unless I want to roll the dice on another Internet purchase, I may have to wait for a year or more to find one. Definitely prefer to buy local so that I can inspect the gun before laying down the credit card.
