Considering An M&P Debating 9 V .40 (Not what you think)

Yes because putting it "on paper" is what helped me decide

Well, sounded like you were quite concerned about magazine availability and the legality of the 17rd 9mm (or what it takes to make legal in CO). And you didn't think the extra 2rds would make much difference in a gun fight (which I agree).

You were leaning toward 9mm because LGS has it in stock, but you can always wait for a .40 if you so choose.

Besides, as others have pointed out - and I also concur from personal experience - that you can always go 9mm if you start with a .40... but not the other way around.

That's just how I read it, which I suppose could be way off.

I shoot the 9mm very well...I like the .40/.45 calibers but they are just not for me. Matching the caliber to the shooter's abilities is more important than raw power. I was considering a .40 S&W just because I really want to shoot it well but I just can't see (money wise) investing in a different caliber.

Smoke: Living in the same boat you are with the magazine restrictions. Think you are leaning in the right direction. 15+1 vs 17+1 is a wash. Unlikely you are going to be in the middle of a firefight where those two extra rounds are significant.

If you are conceal carrying, typical combat load is one magazine in the pistol and one spare, possibly a second.

If you are at the range, your strings of fire are slightly shorter, but I'm usually getting tired after shooting 10 rounds anyway.

Next boondoggle across state lines, you can pick up the 17 round magazines if you need them, but if you have three reliable 15 round magazines, you should be good.

I have the 9, .357, 40, and 45.
My favorite gun is always the last one I bought, but I do find myself shooting .45's quite often. They are just soft shooters.

I carry a 9 or 45.

You could pick up either one for $399 with three mags, and if you later decide you want to sell it I'm sure you wouldn't take a loss...

Good luck!

For right now I have tentatively decided on the 9mm and I have decided to wait a while and see if the supply issues resolve themselves.

Thanks for the input.

9mm. I never understood the attraction of the 40 cal especially with the advances in 9mm technology these days. Well, I guess I do know where the 40 cal came about as it was born out of the aftermath of the 1986 Miami FBI Shootout... but that's a whole other discussion. Very interesting one though. IMO, the 9mm provides easier follow up shots, an additional round... and it's quite deadly.

I don't have any special attraction to the .40S&W caliber as such. I have an S&W 4006 that has always been a grail gun to me but to be honest I'd be just as happy with it if it were a 9mm.

The only draw that the M&P 40 has/had for me was that the magazines are completely legal in Colorado with no grey area.

As far as I'm concerned 15 rounds of .40 V. 17 rounds (or 15 rounds) of 9mm is a wash. If I'm not going to get the job done with the one the other wouldn't have helped me either.

My biggest concern right now is that it seems that accessories for either gun aren't readily available right now and since this gun is a want and not a need I'm going to wait a bit and see if the supply situation unscrews itself before I jump.
