In a store yesterday I saw a no lock 627 with what I thought was a 6" barrel but may have been 5.5", unfluted cylinder. Double action trigger pull was like pulling a truck out of a mud pit. On consignment for $800 with original box. I thought it was steep so I left it there but I don't anything about that model. Was that a decent price?

Thank you.

It looked pretty much like this one pictured.

Probably a reasonable price by the "new standards". Mine has a very nice action. Probably just needs shooting.

With only the one photo it's hard to accurately appraise the gun but here is a little info. (edit: just re-read the op. The photo is a representation only.) Just make sure it's in fine condition.

What you are showing is a 627-0 (not to be confused with no dash) which is a .357 built on an N frame. To my knowledge it is the only (or one of the only) SS guns with the checkering on the top, ala 27-2. At over 50 ounces, it is also about the heaviest .357 you will come across.

There were just over 5000 of these made and the one in the photo has correct combat stocks.

Unless it has push off problems, very few trigger characteristics are a no no for me.

If it's over 95%, $800 seems like a good price. Box and papers may add $50 to the right person. I paid $950 for mine in unfired looking condition without the box.

627's of all variants seem hot right now so unless it has a serious problem, I would not think too long.

The -0 is a unique gun that seems more to be form over function as there are lots of lighter, less expensive alternatives for the power and capability it delivers. Think of it as smart AND pretty but with emphasis on the pretty side.

Although owners like to call it rare, it certainly is available if you pay up and do your part to find it so don't expect it to skyrocket in price.

It is a solid gun with a modest following that seems to be one of those pieces that got all the cool stuff in one package: SS, checkering, capacity, big frame, versatile caliber, good bloodlines in the 627, and not made in the millions.

What's not to like? If you find it's not for you, it will not linger here long when you ask for your money back.

Cheers,

A.

I'm pretty new to revolvers, but I don't think that is a 627. I just ordered one and the barrell is quite different.

Well, you would be incorrect.

I've got one I bought brand new in 1989...a 627-0 (yes, dash zero) Model of 1989. As Avery11 states, it is an unfluted, full under-lug, N-Frame with checkered top like a 27 on the top, round grip frame, combat stocks. Mine has an incredibly smooth action, both DA and SA. My favorite SS .357 mag. Shooting it with any load, from light to heavy, is fun and can be done all day.

For $800, I'd get it.

Oh yes, it is a 5.5 inch barrel. Price tag reflects the 1989 price.

With all due respect, did you not read what I wrote? Do you think I made it up?

There are many variations of the stainless .357 on an N frame AKA the 627 - your chosen moniker.

Read everything you can on this forum and learn from the information given. Really, I find it frustrating that you would not only disregard, but outright refute an informational posting based on one revolver that you ordered.

Before you call someone out as incorrect, read, learn, and contribute your first hand knowledge to the collective work.

There is an etiquette here, sir.

I'm a little grouchy today.;)

627?

It is a 627, one of the last quality revolvers S&W produced. Yours is its ugly younger brother. LOL.

It's a fair price for an excellent revolver. It was probably not shot much, hence the heavy trigger. Good luck.

It's definitely a 627 if it matches the picture and 627-0 to be exact. I see you are new here, but most of the users on here that have been on this board for a while are some of the most knowledgeble people in the Smith and Wesson world, so you can learn quite a bit here. For you info, there have been over a dozen different configurations of the 627 model, not just the one you bought.

Very interesting and informative thread, fellows. I have a 627PC and was interested in some of the other variants of one of my very favorite handguns.

The 627-0 is my favorite Smith revolver and a great shooter. For that price I would buy it if it's in good condition. FWIW I have been watching them on GB for over a year and have never seen one go for under $1000.

627

If I found one for 8 bills I'd buy it. They.357 in the N frame in my humble opinion is one of the finest revolvers made. 3 1/2 inch barrel 27 is tops. cheers

After considering the comments on here and waging an internal argument with myself I went back this morning to buy the gun. Fortunately it was still there. It is indeed a -0. I will post some pics soon.

Thank you for the guidance.
