Conversion barrel for shield

If I buy a M&P Shield 40, does a 9mm conversion barrel exist for this gun.

No. Unless you want to pay a premium from someone who has a barrel they are parting with. You mind as well buy 2 Shields. There are currently no aftermarket companies making a shield barrel.

When i was trying to decide between the Shield 9 and the Shield .40, i searched the web extensively. Apparently, Smith used to sell the 9mm Barrel as a spare part but, once they figured out people were buying the Shield .40 and the 9mm barrel, basically getting two guns, and cutting the sale of the Shield 9mm, they quit marketing the barrel.

S&W does not offer "conversions" for any M&P. To the extent S&W sells barrels, they are replacement barrels, to be used in the same caliber arm.

Keep checking the major distributors, like Brownells, Midway, etc., for Shield 9mm barrels. They are hard to find, but they do occasionally show up. Cost is approx. $75-80. Many have done this 40 to 9mm barrel swap, and made their Full Size, Compact, and Shields dual caliber guns. The stock 9mm barrels are not "conversion" barrels, but the barrel's design allow for the "swap". It is a drop in swap, just pull the 40 barrel and drop in the 9mm barrel. It is not drop in for the opposite swap, 9mm to 40. I did the 40 to 9 swap a year and a half ago, for my Shield 40, and have been very happy with the results using a stock Shield 9mm barrel. Most do the swap for practice, to save on ammunition costs and less wear and tear on the gun, hands and wrist. I always carry with the 40.

Also with my Shield, my 40 mags feed the 9mm cartridges perfectly. Some have stated that they sometimes have jams feeding the last round, using the 40 mags, but I do not have that problem, but I did also buy some 9mm mags. If you buy the 9mm mags, you will not have any feeding issues. And don't listen to those that say the swap of the 9mm barrel will not work, is dangerous, or the accuracy and dependability will diminish, as they are all WRONG. Many members of this Forum have used the barrel swap, and all report good results. I have yet to read one thread saying that anyone had an issue with the 40 to 9mm barrel swap.

I wont say any of that, but before you say "they are all WRONG", you might want to check out the MP-PISTOL Forum/Gunsmithing as well. I'd also like to point out that the 9mm barrel isn't the same width at the rear lug as the .40, thats why you cant just drop the .40 in the 9mm slide. Minimal as the difference might be, its enough for me not to take a chance. Everyone can make their own decision, but it should be an informed one with as much pertinent information as possible.

I have the .40 Shield, I did not want a 9 MM as I wished to get as close to a .45 ACP. as I could without the weight of the .45. The Shield is a CCW gun and for use at close range, yes you can hit at 30 yards but?
My F/Size M&P has a 9 MM Storm Lake barrel that is made for the conversion and a S&W .357 that also is made for the .40 Slide. On the Shield work at getting good at ten yards.

What's up Robkarrob. Glad to see we are all still surviving this .40 to 9mm swap. Since we were all told of how dangerous it was.

But hey what do we know about this swap. It's not like we haven't been doing this since around day 1 haha.

I contacted Lone Wolf and Storm lake a while back about Shield 40 to 9 conversion barrels. One replied back that they do not plan to offer any, and the other said that they hoped to have them available this fall. But for the life of me, I can't remember which gave me a positive answer. Guess I could ask again.

It appears the OP has made the decision to use a 9mm Shield bbl in his Shield 40 and is only asking about availability. Given all the favorable posts with successful 40/9mm bbl swaps, the images, videos, high round counts, and even measurements of the infamous lug difference (with images)... and the long time this issue has been around... I didn't think we would flog this dead horse again.

My personal experience, just for the record: 400+ 9mm rounds in M&P 40fs, 300+ 9mm rounds in my M&P 40c, and, like the OP, I have had poor luck in finding a 9mm bbl for my Shield 40... so I bought a Shield 9 and have run 150+ rounds through the 40 with the 9mm bbl just to show the nay-sayers that it works. Oh, and no hiccups, failures or negative experiences.

Cannot speak for the Shield but I have put over 8000 (yes, thousand) rounds of 9mm through my M&P40 by switching to the 9mm barrel and magazines. Done close to that on my Beretta too by the way.

NOPE, I'm ah gunna stick my head in the sand!! The factory knows best, doesn't matter that at least hundreds, and most likely thousands have proven them wrong. The factory is always right!
We have both factory and aftermarket barrels for 40 to 9, and 40 to 357 Sig. Can't understand what is so difficult about shield 9 barrels in 40's or 40-9 conversion barrels.

Did I miss a post, because the original says "IF I buy a M&P Shield 40, does a 9mm conversion barrel exist for this gun." The only thing that is apparent from that sentence is that he DOES NOT have a Shield 40 yet, and IF he did buy one, could he get a 9mm conversion for it. I have no idea what the OP knows about 9mm and .40 barrels, so I gave him a fact on the difference that no one else had mentioned. I also suggested that he check a different source for more opinions. Just because a bunch of y'all don't care about the slight looseness and have had no problems, doesn't mean that everyone else is going to be OK with it, nor can you guarantee that a problem will never occur. Again, get ALL the information you can and make a decision that you are comfortable with.

mustangman hit the nail on the head. I do not own a Shield yet. Just trying to get 2 guns for the cost of a one gun and a barrel.

I just did this with the M&P 40 CORE I just bought. KKM 9mm barrel 215. The new CORE only cost me $430 on gunbroker.

So it would appear that a specific 40 to 9mm conversion barrel does not exist yet.

I will just get the 9mm Shield since with such a small gun I prefer not to have as much "kick" if I am carrying it.

At the risk of setting off alarms all across the forum . Does any one know if a 9mm barrel for a M&P compact would work in a .40 M&P shield . I know the compact barrel is les tha an inch longer but I dont know about the lock up .

I contacted Storm Lake and others regarding a 40-9mm conversion barrel for the Shield. I rec'd the same response from Storm Lake as mentioned above that they originally (2013) had "hoped to have a 40 to 9mm conversion for the Shield spring 2014". I contacted them again June 2014 and they still plan to market one but didn't have a date yet.

Since they stated "hoped to have a 40 to 9mm conversion for the Shield...", I'm going out on a limb and guessing that the M&Pc barrel would NOT work with the Shield. If it did, all the 3rd Party barrel makers would already be offering it (and possibly threading the extra length).
Just a guess.

Welcome to the forum. Don't think it will work, but cant give any real specifics as to why, all circumstantial. I think I read somewhere that it may have to do with the taper at the muzzle end of the barrel, and maybe a feed ramp difference. It was a while back, and cant really remember, so I may be way off base. Hopefully one of the Shield conversion guys or someone that has both guns, will step in and can give you the straight scoop.
