Do you think any 3rd party companies will make conversion kits for these guns to fire the 5.56 or .223 like its big brother?

The lower will not accept a 556 upper. The buffer tube cant accommodate a spring and something about the bolt catch being longer and going farther up to compensate for the smaller Bolt carrier. Don't quote me though.

A polymer (PLEASE! It's not plastic! ;) ) lower receiver will work fine as will a polymer upper. Neither of these parts takes any strain in the M16 design. You can buy a polymer AR15 from Bushmaster in the form of the Carbon-15. Weighs less than five pounds (maybe less than the M&P15-22).

Anyway, you can buy a lower receiver for under $100 and build up the rest of the parts; a full caliber upper upper would be the same price as a conversion upper.

Have you heard any feedback on those Plum Crazy lowers? From what I saw, even the fire control group is polymer. I think I'd rather spend the extra $25-50 and get a metal lower.

I looked at a Carbon15 at Sportsman Warehouse the other day. It had a regular stock (not what was in the pic above), SuperLight barrel and Bushnell Micro Dot (no sights) for $650. Nice rifle.

Chuck,

I've seen a Colt that had an an out of battery mishap (something that you say is impossible with the M16 design, and it should be) but it happened.. And the Forged Alloy receiver contained the detonation. Would Poly?

.22 sure.. .223 I dunno....

The firing pin in the M16/AR15 cannot reach the primer unless and until the bolt is fully closed and locked. This makes an out of battery mishap impossible.

Impossible with the rifle in spec, well maintained, and firing proper ammunition. ;) An incorrect firing pin, or one broken and wedged sticking out the face of the bolt might do this. And don't discount the freak accident syndrome.

A more believable -- and frightfully common mishap -- is a negligent reloaded cartridge (it's always reloads), or an obstructed barrel, perhaps from a bad reload with no powder. Good chance to blow up the rifle -- any rifle.

Doesn't really matter if a 5.56 upper would fit or not.

The fact that an AR-15 mag won't fit into the 15-22's magazine well kind of settles it right there, IMHO.
