Convert to Single Action?

Would anyone be able to tell me how simple (or difficult) it would be to convert a model 14 to single action only?

I'm not looking for any particular improvements such as reduced hammer travel or better trigger feel. It just needs to be single action in order to meet certain silly regulations.

I want to say I've read that you just need to remove the DA sear.

I have a s/a model 14. The factory offered them that way. My guess is if you put an ad in the classified, someone has the parts they took off to convert theirs to d/a : )

From what I remember of my S&W factory revolver class, which was many moons ago, that's it. Just drift out the little pin and take the sear and sear spring out. Stash the parts somewhere you won't lose them.

What he said. Put the pin back in its hole in the hammer, the factory would have. No parts needed whatsoever.

I'm not sure what regulations you're trying to meet, but if you are talking self defense you would probably want to go more with DAO. A person would be more likely to have a AD with a SA gun than a DA.

I was looking at some diagrams and it looks like removing the sear will still allow the hand to rotate the cylinder, but the hammer is just going to sit there.

As for the regs... it's a CA "approved" list thing.

Can you explain what you mean? I live in kali and the approved list applies to a specific gun model. A gun is either on the approved list or it's not. You can't get approval of a gun by modifying it.

I agree if this is a defense gun, it should never be SA only.

My guess here is that he's wanting to get around the list requirement by using the single action exemption. I know this was discussed several years ago when the list started. I've been told several times that various manufacturers wanted to modify their DA guns to SA in order to circumvent the listing requirement. I can't say first hand but have been told that DOJ shot that idea down.

Regardless, it would NEVER work if a person tried to modify a manufactured DA/SA gun to SA and then claim an exemption, since it was not manufactured SA only.

Whether or not you can find a dealer that would DROS a 14 as a single action would also be an interesting question.

I can't see that as possible since he would have to list the model of the gun and the gun he would list on the DROS form is a DA/SA gun.

I can't see an advantage "target wise" in converting to SA only which is probably why the factory stopped selling the gun that way and if a 14 is not CDOJ approved now, your modification is sure not gonna convince them. If you're committed to the mod everyone is correct: drive out the sear and you're in business.

The answer to what I'm guessing is the real question here is probably available on the Calguns website. Someone there seems to be always trying to come up with a fresh approach and I would bet that this subject has been discussed there many times.

True, but as a warning to those who live in kali but may not know: some of the things I have seen suggested on that site are illegal so proceed at your own risk. It is also a fact that the DOJ monitors that site and if one were a bit paranoid, he might suspect that they could be making such suggestions to see who might be inclined to follow them.
