I like the 27/28s and am thinking about one. I like the 6 shot for competing in revolver class but would prefer to carry an 8 shot. Is there a way to swap the 6 and 8 shot parts back and forth?
I guess the main problem would be the rotating parts (hand, pawl and such). They may not fit an older frame?? Has anyone done this??
Thanks,
Happy Hunter

I don't know of anyone who had this done. That said, the project would require a new 8 shot cylinder assembly and a new hand designed for the 8 shooter's shorter throw. Also the 8 shot 627 cylinder is quite a bit shorter than regular N frame cylinders (at least in my little group of N frames). Due to the shorter cylinder you'd probably run into headspace problems with the breach end of the barrel.

I really like the 8 shot 627 that I have, and suggest you just use this idea as an excuse to buy another gun.

My understanding is that it is not possible because the barrel is pushed higher in the frame because of the larger diameter of the chambers required to fit 8 shots in the same size cylinder.

Like Glockist said, the 8 shot frame is different from the 6 shot frame. The 8 shot cylinder has the center of the chambers further away from the center of the cylinder than the 6 shot. The center of the bore of the barrel likewise sits higher in the frame than the same in a 6 shot frame/barrel.

So, no can do.

Thanks for the info. If the chambers are cut farther from center then it definitly won't work.
Thanks for the info!!

As far as an excuse to but another gun. I don't have either gun, so now I need to decide which to buy first.

As stated above, you cannot convert to an eight shot because of the barrel placement but you could convert to a seven shot as I have seen that done by a gunsmith by the name of Baumann I believe. If I remember correctly, they were advertised as Baumannized.

Question. If the N frame 8 shot is different then the 6 shot what about the L frame 7 shot? Same thing?

Yep.

I had a "Baumanized" M-28. You need a 7 shot ejector/ratchet. The 6 shot hand can be made to work.
