I don't mind clutter. In fact, it makes me feel good, kind of warm and fuzzy. Wives don't always agree with what we do, but over the years they just kind of give up. So right next to the basement door is where her piano lives. And its got this real nice top, right at the level you can just store stuff for transport down the stairs. Conversely, things that come up can be put there for later distribution to whereever. A few minutes ago I looked at it and felt kind of good. There was my outboard motor! No, not a big one, but a small toy. Like the kind we'd see on toy runabouts back in the 1950s. I bought it for a dollar or so a few years ago and it got lost in the move. I saw it again and brought it upstairs to look at. I have no idea how much current it can handle. I'm guessing it either ran on 2 or 4 D cells. And its the only one I've seen in years.

And then there's the holster. It was a gift from David Carroll. It came out of the collection of Frank Hodges I'm told. And the reason I've got it is on the back is stamped "Wm Mayer, Maker Cov Ky." Its where I live, and its the only gun related stuff I've got that was made here. Its very good quality. Nice selection of leather, nice stitching. We think its for a 4" M&P (ok, call it a model 10 if you want).

Also there's a MRE. Chicken and Noodles. Its on the way upstairs for my grand daughter. She's interested in "Army food". When she heard the menu, she wanted to open it right then. But she'd just eaten, so we decided the next time she's over. My son thinks she really isn't as interested in the food as all the little boxes and packets full of goodies. Just like Christmas. Lots of surprise presents.

Value is where you find it. Stuff makes me happy. Even if its minor stuff. Call it clutter if you want. I think its treasures.

Get her the old ones with the cigarettes in them :D

I try to explain to Dangerious Diane that stuff on the kitchen table, living room couch, 2 tables in the dining room, the "Man Cave" aren't junk, but they are past and future memmories. She still wantsthem put away when we have company over.( I think she invites people over just to visit the table tops!)

pianos do seem to be clutter collection points.
I try to keep my wifes piano clear as best i can. I want her to be able to play.
the guitar amp section on the other hand ... I'll be needing some lead time before the next gig. lots of cables, stomp boxes, mics, spare and project amp heads not to mention the electronics engineering stuff that make the amps possible, oscilloscope, breadboards, wire, semicondictors a plenty and a few PSU's to make smoke with when I just cant figure out how to use some of the above right.
But the piano ... I hold sacred

I haven't had a wife in 13 years so clutter isn't really a problem....until it prevents me from going somewhere I want to go. Then I just move it somewhere else. But, So far I remember where everything is although my family may have a little trouble when I'm gone.

There is my stuff and her stuff, and more of her stuff she calls our stuff, but it's not stuff I would ever use, want or need. My stuff is relegated to the basement shop or gun safe.

Had a girlfriend once that HATED clutter. She was pretty fine and good to be around, but once things got a little tattered she tossed them... then one day she got around to me...

I catch heck for my clutter. I'm always being asked to clear off the counter tops or table.
The one place I'm free to clutter is my gun bench and it's always full of stuff mostly gun related. Every now and then I get asked to clear it too but it doesn't last long.
The piana is a clear zone however. Must be in a different life it wasn't as the piano tuner found a silver dollar and other stuff inside.

My gun room is mine. My wife even says she was only in it one time. Sons want access, but that's a loser from the start.

Its even kind of funny how it came to be. I was at the builder and demanded a 10x10 room with a doorway (with exact dimensions). Thickness wasn't an issue but his 8" reinforced concrete seemed OK with me. But then I called a buddy in Colorado and told him. His only response was "why so small?" OK, he wins and we doubled it. Now I find my little cubbyhole to be too tiny. Furniture is interesting, and there ain't gonna be now pianos in or near it. It started out with just my old fashioned card catalog from some long lost library. You know the kind 6 drawers by 5 rows, then repeated below the pull out shelves. it gives you 60 drawers to put ammo or bullets and what not. Also nice little slots where you can label the drawers so you can find odds and ends. And then it also had the large executive desk from out in the old garage. It already had holes drilled in the top for a few things.

But then the trouble started. At work they were tossing out a bunch of furniture we'd bought at an auction. Yes, it was very nice but a bit too bulky. And it included another executive size desk with an L shaped wing on it. And a bookcase that matched. Really nice and I couldn't bear seeing it go to a dump. So this little room is getty short on space (to say the least.) Then I realized I wasn't ever going to bore big holes in the walnut or mahogany desks for my reloading press, and I kind of even wanted 2 presses, being a man of great wealth (as measured in the ammo stocks and shines on the desk tops.) So out to the new garage I went, locating and somehow hauling by my self the old reloading bench. I made it back in 1971 from a front door. Solid as they called them, but really a laminate with nice veneer on the tops. And holes predrilled. :) But then I needed to find another door to scavenge a leg that didn't make the move. The thing only has 2 legs, both the full 3-0 size of the top. You could drive a truck over it. The legs are attached with cleats made from scraps of the donor door, all lag bolted together. So space is getting tight.

And now my wife wants to throw out my leather recliner where I read and post from! She's too smart to say its either her or the chair. I just wonder if I can induce my son and grandson to help get it to the dungeon. The carrot I can hold out in front of them is a visit to the secretive gun room. If they refuse, I'll get the guys that deliver the new furniture to at least move it to the lower level.

And I really love my one wall of .50 cal cans. It looks more impressive than it is because some cans are empty still. Of course I'm about the only one who knows the score, and I don't like outsiders. Even "insiders" don't get many chances to view it! :D And its where the cool stuff resides before coming down or going back up.

Drew,

I's had me one of them 'High Tone wemen' one time.........

A place for everythin' and everythin' in it's place kinda gal.

I stay'd about three days ahead of her on that deal.

She finially got everything in it's place,

except for ol' your truly and she went on back home to momma. ;)

As that kid on TV sez 'bout his gun screwdrive sets, "I love this stuff!"

I'm married to an interior decorator, so you know I don't leave things lying around. So when we built our condo some years ago, I got to design the basement, she got to design the upstairs. Well, I got to design the basement as long as I provided one Bedroom, Bath, and family room on half of it. Also, we had to have storage room. My criteria was had to have a 10 meter clear space for my airgun range, and a wood working workshop. Then I did wind up with a 11X21 gun/reloading room with a 4'X7' concrete vault on one corner. So far it still handles everything I need, and there is still a little room left in the vault for a few more guns. My stack of 50 cal ammo cans has just about filled the space under a 11' gun cleaning bench. I'm happy until I run out of room, and at my age I don't think that is going to happen.

Stuff...

The boys built me a Mancave for Father's Day a few years ago...

It's heavily reenforced and hardened to the point that it could serve handily as a bomb shelter or Zombie Apocolypse retreat...

These are old photos... Its pretty well stuffed with treasures now and tough to move around in...

I'm thinking about annexing the entire basement... politics won't be a problem... No one to ask for permission! I guess I could park a CONEX container in the back lot for the junk I move out ....

"You can tune a piano but you can't tune a fish".
There's some logic in there if you think long and hard about it. Don't try too hard, it's more basic than you think.;):D

After reading this thread I don't feel so bad. My wife is a quilter and sews all the time and boy you ought to see the clutter in her sewing room. Matter of fact lots of her clutter covers up my loading bench and equipment. Guess I better do something about that. As far as holding on to things that make you feel warm and fuzzy I have probably got the market cornered. Among lots of things that I have kept is the first colored TV that I ever bought. Bought it in Feb. 1964 and it is an RCA, about 5 feet long, maple cabinet, victrola on one end and radio on the other end, doors that open upwards for access to these components. This was before 8 track players were in existance. Has 10 speakers and was top of the line in '64. Nothing on tv then that was colored except Bonanza and The Virginian I think. It is upstairs in my 2 story barn where I keep lots of things that make me feel warm and fuzzy.

If your wife or girlfriend complains about clutter, just point out all of the potion and lotion bottles in the shower. Most probably with the lids unscrewed.
