Copper Import Tariff

I thought the post was about Cooper rifles, but they're made in America.

Chile, Peru and the US have free trade agreements. I believe those three maybe the largest suppliers? If not US maybe be 4th or 5th.
I believe Alton is correct, along with lead. China has been known, for at least 20 years, to be buying most scrap copper on the market. Since that is a strategic metal I encourage congress to put a stopper on this metal export.

Think this may have a slight impact on ammo prices but I may be wrong.

Copper is, of course, used in nearly all munitions production. We import copper to make artillery rounds, missles, mines and bombs, not to mention small arms ammunition. Copper is also critical for anything electric. It's the cheapest good conductor there is. And it's all imported.

They tried aluminum, which is cheaper, but it's not nearly as good or useful conductor.

Prices of copper are at an all time high already - $5.51 per pound. And copper thieves have been very active the last year or so. Raiding phone company cable and building suppliers.

The US produces about half of the copper we consume each year. Most of the remainder is imported from Chile and Canada. While China is a big player in copper production, we don't import very much from them. The US has abundant copper ore; we just don't have enough smelting and refining capacity.

My older brother worked on a strip copper mine in AZ years ago. Story was the trace elements/minerals obtained payed the costs of production, the copper was profit. But, they closed when copper prices fell so I don't know.

I live within sight of the Chino/Santa Rita copper mine and the Tyrone mine across the valley here in southern New Mexico. My town was a Superfund site -- now remediated -- after they closed the smelter and dropped the stacks. I hear traffic from the mine 24/7. The local economy would be in a shambles if Freeport McMoRan pulled out. It was a big day in Hurley when they dripped the old Kennecott stacks in 2007. Still see flatbeds hauling large plates of pure copper. It is such a gorgeous and useful metal.

Does Michigan still mine copper? Maybe he's trying to flip Michigan by bring them jobs?
