While cleaning my Model 29 I noticed the trigger had vertical grooves cut into it. My Model 28 trigger has no grooves. Both guns have target hammers that are the same, date to the mid 1970's, came in a presentation case, and have a nickel finish. What is the I purchased the Model 29 new and the Model 28 doesn't look like it was ever shot much. Did S&W change the trigger manufacture or was the finger surface an option?

According to the book, the model 28's came with a .265" serrated, or a .400" smooth trigger. 29's came with a .400" (81-99), or .500" serrated trigger. Combat triggers are generally narrower and smooth compared to a wider, serrated target style trigger.

???????????????????

Are we to understand that "both" guns came in a presentation case and "both" guns are nickel finished? As stated above you probably have a smooth combat trigger and a serrated target trigger. However, the mod 28 was a utility gun sold primarily to police depts. It is a no frills mod 27! A nickel finish, combat trigger, and presentation case are probably not original to this gun!

My mistake. The first gun is a model 29 as stated in the original post. The second gun is a Model 27 not a Model 28. Both are nickel plated and came in wooden presentation cases. The 29 has a 6.5" barrel and the 27 has a 6" barrel. I do have a letter from S&W on the Model 27 showing the gun is as manufactured.

A mid-1970s model 27-2 would have had the .500" wide serrated Target trigger as standard, but it could have been ordered with the smooth version.

The Model 29-2 and the Model 27-2 (beginning in September 1975) were cataloged with a target hammer, target trigger that is 0.500 inch wide with a grooved, not serrated, surface, mahogany presentation case, and target stocks made of Goncalo alves. The trigger on the Model 27-2 is a special order.

It could be ordered with one, just as the M27 could. My M28-2 has the smooth trigger, I only wish all my others had it, too.
