Cost to Replace Sear on M19?

I have a model 19-2 that someone did a trigger job on. If you cock it and push on the hammer with your thumb it will release and fire. I'd like to have the sear replaced so this doesn't happen. Any idea what that would cost?

Thanks, Bill

A competent gunsmith may be able to re cut the sear and fit it for you. The sear you are referencing is cut into the hammer itself. If too much material was removed on the previous "trigger job" you will need to purchase another hammer and have it fit to your trigger.

There are actually two sears. The double action sear is held in place in the front of the hammer by a pin and pivots with a small spring behind it. The single action sear is actually cut into the bottom of the hammer.

If you are unable to find a good gunsmith you can always contact the factory. They will get you going in good shape if they still have the parts available. Hammers run about 45 to 50 $ then whatever the labor. It doesn't take a good factory fitter very long to fit one. Maybe 15 min.

If you send it in, call them first, parts for the older ones seem to be getting hard to locate at the plant.

Usually "push-off" is caused by the wrong angle on the trigger nose. If the gunsmith didn't get too enthusiastic with the "trigger" job, it is an easy repair. However, with any gun that has been worked on, I also check out the other parts...

Bill, hello, is not so much a trigger job as someone did a job on your trigger as is sounds here. it could be the hammer or trigger or a combo of both. if said gunsmith took some material off the trigger`s sear hook/engage surface, making it rounded or short, it can slip off. or, it can be the hammer notch is hardly a notch anymore. took it from a 90 degree hook and turned into a rounded radius. its for sure unsafe as is. you would have to look very close at both. first check in the gun with main spring backed off or removed, with side plate off. you will be able to see how the two parts work togather. next remove both parts and look at the engage surface of both.a magnifier glass helps. you may be able to see what part is at fault.
if your not familiar with taking it apart or have never been inside a smith DA revolver, your better off finding a real gunsmith to check it over and tell you what it needs. as to cost, it depends on what parts are needed or work that could be done to save parts you have. if you know someone who has any extra K frame hammers or k/L/N triggers you may be best off to just try each or both and then see how it works. if that does it, then a part or parts change would most likely be cheaper then gunsmith work to your parts. just my 2 cents.
