Hey folks! I’m thinking of cutting down a 6” model 629 barrel to 5”. Anyone have a ballpark figure on what that might cost? I’m not looking for a Hamilton Bowen job here, just done properly. Thanks!

I sent two barrels to Andy Horvath about 13 months ago. One was an older blued 6 1/2" Mdl 29 with the double pinned sight base that had been refinished (The letters were very light) and the other was a blued 6 1/2" Mdl 25-2 barrel in pretty decent shape (may have been refinished). I asked Andy to cut the 25 barrel to 5" and use the ramp base and sight off the 29 barrel on the shortened 25 barrel (wanted that factory look). I also asked that he high polish blue the 25 barrel and reinstall the red ramp. I received a letter from him the other day saying the barrel was done and asking for payment. I sent a MO, should have the barrel back next week. The cost was $250. Not sure what he'd charge today. I still have the 25-2 that I had the barrel cut for but have honestly lost interest in the project. Also have a guy that wants the gun. I'll have to decide once the barrel gets here.

Don't forget that any markings on the barrel will be a little wonky looking after the barrel is trimmed an inch.

That depends on how they stamped the barrel.

This barrel could easily be cut back to 5” or even 4” and look correct.

I'd recommend either sell/trade your 6" Model 629 and by one that has the 5 inch barrel or buy a 5" barrel and have a good gunsmith perform a swap. If you do the swap, keep the original barrel so that if you ever sell the 629, it can be returned to original configuration.

Just got the Model 25-2 barrel back from Andy Horvath. Looks pretty dang amazing to me! Andy did exactly what I asked, and it came out perfect. I like the way cutting it to 5" almost perfectly centered the markings on both sides of the barrel. Muzzle looks great, sight install looks perfect and bluing is excellent. The project wasn't cheap (two barrels and labor), but top-notch work isn't.
