Could someone please offer an idea or two?

This may be out in left field, but a P365 would fit well in a holster in the lower (mid-upper leg) pocket of cargo pants. Just switch from the belt position and place in the pocket when seated.

This exactly how carry my p365 when making extended drives. The transition from the pocket to iwb holster and vise versa is easy to do in the car. You could also just keep it holstered in the cargo pocket although it does flop around some what. I use a Recluse cargo pocket holster.

7-15 hour drives

Check out Kirkpatrick Texas Cross Draw.... I've got two one for a Beretta 92 Compact/Centurion another for S&W 69xx guns. Both have been used for our 7-9 hour drive from W Pa. to the Outerbanks NC.
I tend to wear a vest over it (light weight Duluth Trading or fleece)...... for the pockets! :)

Hmm. I am in the camp of stashing your weapon next to you in the car, and trying not to forget to pick it up when you stop for gas. In my truck, it fits nicely between the 60/40 seat, snug as a bug in a Mika holster. In the car, I usually put it in the door pocket. I don’t think there is a comfortable way to carry that fits every situation. This compromise is best for me.

gun Lether and carry gear

Most of the time, in my vehicle and carry gun, I use the Wilderness Safepacker Concealment holster. This belt is most versatile, and truly utilitarian holster in the world. With its low-profile, unconventional looks, you would call it the "un-holster"possibly the most usable gun-case ever made. It allows you to keep your sidearm and ammunition ready to grab and go at all times - and that is jurist the beginning of its abilities. I have been using several items in their lineup of products.

I also use a Blackhawk messenger style backpack (single strap). I velcro a safariland retention holster in the pocket. It's exactly like my duty holster except for the thumb hood so it is familiar, fast and secure. And it's more tacticool than a fanny pack.

I also sometimes use a shoulder holster on long trips. My set up is a 2” Model 12 in a knock-off upside down holster. Its so light I forget its there, but the main advantage is if you have to drop trou in a truck stop john the gun stays secure and above the fray.

Holsters are a pretty individual thing...kinda like asking me to pick out a pair of comfortable shoes for you. I can tell you what works for me. I IWB every day and have for a long time. But for road trips, a shoulder rig gets the nod. Galco makes a good one. Anything nylon is too bulky for me. It has an offside mag pouch that balances out the load which prevents it from binding. Or you can, like on this old Bianchi rig, add a left hand holster for a second gun. That was my thought on this set up, as the second gun is a force multiplier if my passenger does not have a sidearm.
