couple knives

I owe a fellow mason for some favors so I cranked out the polished D2 drop point and sheath. These are very wear resistant and will clean a few animals before they start to dull. The scales are stabilized maple burl

Another buddy had a buddy who wanted a bowie so I did this one. 1095 and 15n20 damascus and some redwood burl, aluminum, bronze and some carbon fiber material from the steath program

Very nice work ! I just finished two taking the knife making course again at Adult Ed. It’s great way to make a knife without having to spend a lot on equipment. I’ve taken the class 6 times since 2012 and have built 10 knives. These two are lacewood and Rams Horn handles. I gave the lacewood handle one to my wife for Christmas. She picked the handle material, designed the file pattern on back of blade and stitched the sheath before she knew it was her present.

Knife making course? That sounds pretty cool. Who hosts that? Do you just pay for material and away you go? I’d love it if something like that was offered around me.

Bald1 - it’s hosted by the City through the adult Ed program at the High School. Instructor is a well known custom knife maker. You pay the tuition to the City and a materials fee to the instructor for the steel and the cost of a pre cut sheath kit should you want to make a sheath (he teaches how to make a wet form hand stitched sheath also). It is an 8 week course you start by picking a pattern and then the steel is cut to rough shape. It is all hand sanding no polishing with buffers or belts.

To me a drop point of that size is the most practical hunting knife. Clean, skin, and break down anything from a small deer to a elk with no problem. I have cleaned an elk and 2 deer with one of theses D2 blades and sliced the dates out out my tag after the last one. But, you best not use them for a pry bar.
