Hello all,

I've been trying to get my j-frame to fit my medium to large size hands. Would like to find grips with a covered backstrap (to give me a little more length of pull).

I have tried the Pachmayr Compac and like it very much, but would rather have two-finger grips (that do not extend below the frame) for easier pocket carry.

I cannot locate grips that both cover the backstrap and do not extend below the frame. Wood or rubber........

Anyone have any ideas?

The Crimson Trace LG-405; they are more expensive than standard rubber stocks. There are probably others but I have personal experience with these.

Alan,

Yes, I have a set of the CrimsonTrace on my LCR.............I think they would be OK...........but I was hoping to find something that did not cost almost as much as the gun.....

Thanks for the reply..............

Jeff

Yup, they are pricey.

GaryS,

Thanks for the reply.............
In the photo, it look like the Hogue Monogrip extends below the the bottom of the frame. Am I correct?

Sure would prefer something a little shorter.........

Thanks......Jeff

Have you tried the Hogue Monogrip for the J frame? I have one on my 442 and find it very comfortable.

I thought about that one, they do cover the backstrap but extend a little below the grip frame, and can't be modified to be shorter due to the attachment on the lower frame, I think.

If you don't mind modifying grips - You could find a pair of uncle mikes 59007 "rubber" grips (like the ones that came on the 360J's) and remove the third finger of the grip if you know someone with a mill - there is a nice plastic rib that could be followed for removal. Just a though - at least you would not be modifying an expensive set of grips to get what you want.

They do, but only by a little bit. I find I get a better grip that way.

+1... The only way to go!

woody1911 and allglock,
I've hard of that approach before and find it quite appealing. Can you post a picture? I saw someone else mention that on this site quite a while ago and he said you could find a tutorial by googling "grip-ectomy." I tried that but didn't find anything.

Like Hanzerdog, I prefer to have the backstrap covered to move my trigger finger, but also to mitigate recoil, and would also prefer a shorter grip on a J, though I do love my Pachmayr Compacs on my 65.

Thanks for your insight,
Continental Op

Excellent! Thanks guys. The look at the inside makes it look like it would be pretty easy to do and that the look at the finished product makes me really want to give it a try. Are these grips still available new? I thought I heard that they had stopped making them and that that's why S&W changed their factory grips not too long ago.

They are no longer made, but I see them all the time on E-Bay.

Lots of great suggestions. The more Smiths that find their way to my house l find my grip collection expanding exponentially...
