Cowboy wisdom

Always ride in the middle in the pickup truck. That way you don't have to drive or open and close the gates.

There's a guy I once cowboyed with that always did that. He'd always smart off with the remark, "The real cowboy always rides in the middle," and when we'd climb in the truck, sure enough, he'd always get in the middle, leaving me to open and close the gates.

One afternoon, we cured him of that. I happened to be riding next to the window on the passenger side, as usual, and this kid, as always, was in the middle. We had to go into town to pick up something. We were in the middle of a busy downtown, cars all around us, and stopped at a red light. I bent way over putting my head in my lap, where other cars couldn't see me, making it look like this character was snuggled up next to the driver. After a few weird stares from other drivers, this kid finally caught on and started thumping me on the back. "Get up!! Get up!!" he yelled. I was laughing so hard I couldn't have straightened up if I had wanted to. The light finally turned green and I resumed my regular sitting position. But...that clown never insisted on sitting in the middle after that.
