Coyotes made Mistake

Here in New England, they're a hybrid coyote/dog/Canadian wolf, and an invasive species that worked its way down from Canada in the last generation or two. They can be twice the size of the western cousins.

I have talked to several local farmers yesterday and this AM.
They can't get over how state won't admit coyotes made the
horse kill. I live a bout 6 mi from kill, my deer camp about 2 mi
buddies farm next door to kill. There are "experts" from all over
putting there two cents worth in, from afar. Mountain Lions?
Anything better than admitting the truth. Most of us around these
parts besides hunting and fishing we are in the field and woods
in our every day lives. We know what lives there, don't need a
DNR dupe to tell us. State needs to put in bounty or a major
trapping program. Shooting random coyotes will not hurt them.
Poisoning is not a option in this area. It will be hard enough to
get a bounty passed with the animal rights people and out of
state experts spouting off, like their opinions are the facts.

I have lived around coyotes for 60+ years and I'm no fan of them. I've killed many, many of them. To be fair, though, I've never heard of a coyote, or a pack of coyotes, taking down a full size horse. Sheep, yeah, and especially lambs, young deer and antelope. Small housepets too. But, with all due respect, I would be very skeptical about any allegation that one or more coyotes took a horse. A wolfpack will do that - I've seen wolves take large wild and domestic animals and lots of 'em. Not saying this story isn't possible - it might have happened - just sayin' I never heard of such a thing.

The 19 year old girl was killed in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 2009. There was a documentary about it on Natgeo or Discovery a few years ago. Very well documented case, but of course coyotes are really cute and cuddley, just like in Disney movies.

Well....there it is! They killed a girl! I'm surprised we still allow them to exist. Should have been extinct a month after that incident!

Nothing makes you madder
than some snot nosed official telling you coyotes have always
been here, you just didn't see them.

I'll agree with you there...I'd sure have a hard time believing someone with snot comin' out his nose, I guarandamntee you. Matter of fact, I probably couldn't stand to be around 'em long enough to hear what they had to say. Be scared some of it'd get on me.

Don't know about coyotes always having been there. Most records show coyotes moving into Ohio around 1910-1915. They were probably there before that, but probably no one saw 'em or paid attention if they did.

It also doesn't help for a
bunch of "animal activist" types to be spouting off on something they know nothing about.

I'd agree with you there, too, except for one thing. I've searched every story I can find about the coyote problem in Ohio, but I can't find a thing about those animal activists. I reckon if there was a stink to be raised about it, some of those PETA folks woulda been all over this in a heartbeat. But I'm just not seeing that. I mean, they got all up in arms and went to court here in North Carolina over one little possum (seriously), so any coyote "abuse" would probably raise a bunch of red flags to them.

I think it is going to take a bounty program to wipe out the coyote.

Current market value for a prime coyote pelt is between $10-$15 in the best case scenarios. Speaking as someone who used to varmint hunt, it wouldn't be worth my time and expenses to sit out all day or night with a predator call (or even over a bait site) waiting on a coyote to show up. I'd have to shoot between five and ten coyotes a day to make it worth my while. I could make more money a week workin' down at the hardware store. And I'd be inside where it's warm. Or cool, depending on the season. Not outside getting eat up by skeeters or freezing my butt off, eatin' potted meat and saltines like I used to do.

"Wipe out" the coyote with a bounty program? No, it ain't gonna happen. We're in the 21st Century now, not the 1920s or 30s. No state or federal government is going to sponsor a bounty program with the stated purpose of "wiping out" a native American species, no matter what the species is. If a state like Massachusetts can bankroll a program to dedicate a whole island to preserving rattlesnakes, you think someone's gonna go for totally wiping out coyotes? C'mon.

The state doesn't have to admit anything. But supposing they did. Some DNR spokesperson gets up behind a podium and says, "Yep, a coyote did it." Well, then what? That isn't going to make the coyotes go away. Coyotes are sorta like ISIS. We know ISIS kills folks, so we kill a bunch of 'em in return. But they ain't gone away yet. Same with the coyotes.

I really don't understand how living in close proximity to where this happened tells anyone what kind of animal killed the horse. There was a guy got shot and killed just a mile up the road from me, but I sure don't know who pulled the trigger.

As I said before, there's no season and/or bag limits on coyotes in Ohio. You can even trap them all year long, again with no limit.

My suggestion is y'all just shoot every one you see. Organize some hunts. Get a bunch of folks together and create your own unofficial bounty program. I'd keep it quiet, though. Everyone contributes x-amount of dollars to the kitty. Stop waiting on the government to do something about it.

I wish y'all luck. You're gonna need it.

I don't think we ever will,or should, wipe them out but we should make them less then comfortable around humans-no matter what any coyote defenders may say I'd think if you have kids you should be very, very nervous if you have a pack or two running free and loose in your area.

My attitude is simple:I carry so if I have a good shot I'll take it.

Also the east coast ones are interbreeding with domestic dogs and in a lot of cases are way bigger then the ones out west,a pack of those might just take a horse out,and a human if they take a mind to I'm sure

I'm sorry, I was merely correcting what had been mentioned before and giving a link to the CBC story for anyone interested. I guess I prefer Girls to Coyotes. :)

I'd say that is a coydog, or maybe a coyredwolf. I'd also say it needs killin'.
Maybe it's the natural order of things, and he's there to put a dent in the population of well-fed vermin.

new mexico has special rules for vermin.
rabbits, wild hogs, coyotes have no season
n you need no licence to kill them
any livestock owner can ask the state to put out poison baits.
none of this makes any difference. i hear them howl all the time.
it doesn't help that the feds are stupid.
kids used to kill them n sell hides to export to japan.
that is no longer legal.
they still shoot them but now they hang the carcasses on street signs.
that's wasteful.
kids should be allowed to profit from their labor

Thanks for correcting the name of the province. Yes, it was in Nova Scotia, not New Brunswick. But I got the singer's name right. Give her a listen on YouTube. Heck of a loss.

The Coyote has established itself as the model adaptor. The Darwinian masterpiece of evolution. It lives in all 48 contiguous states plus Alaska. I regard them highly.

Owning a ranch comes with the territory. They were here first and will be here long after we have messed up the ecosystem. Try all you want. You won't get rid of them.

Yotes are everywhere. I live in the suburbs of Columbus and see a dead one by the side of the highway monthly. I was talking to the ranger at one of the local Metro Parks about yotes and he wishes we could go in and thin them out, they're killing off all the red fox around here. Too bad too, it's a wetlands reclamation project, several hundred acres of scrub land with landscaping done to create vernal pools in the spring. Be perfect to setup with a .22 and a night scope in the evening lol

As a dog owner, I wouldn't take any pleasure in killing a coyote. I would only kill one if he threatened my dog.

In my suburb, there are some coyotes, but they haven't been a threat to any people. The police department has coyote hazing instructions for people who don't want them around.

To me, the bloodthirsty "kill them all" attitude is barbaric.

Live in a city of around 15,000 and about 8 miles from one of 130,000 in Central Illinois and when I use to go into work at 3 AM I would see coyotes or coydogs running almost every morning as I was going through town .. There was some worry for the 4-5 town drunks that would stagger around town after the bars closed at 2 am .. almost all the stray cats were gone didn't see them like you use too .. more coons live in town then here in the country ..life is easier for them with all the garbage cans and dumpsters left uncovered ..

Retired now so not usually up that time of night but we hear them howling a couple of times a week late at night or early in the morning before dawn .. had one in my back acre eyeing my dog when I let her out at 6 am one morning .. he was gone before I could get out of the house and around to the back .. all I saw was his shadow going through the brush into the field ..
