CPD marked revolver

Just came into possession of an M&P 5-screw, c-prefix serial number with 2" barrel, round butt. On left side of frame just in front of the grip panel is a circle with CPD marked in it.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Googling any combination of "S&W, 5-screw, M&P, pre-10, CPD" netted nothing but drivel about installing night sights on an M&P semi-auto - incredibly ill-conceived and irritating.

My first guess was Chicago PD, but I'd love to hear from some of you guys in the know.

There are probably almost uncountable cities or towns that marked their guns CPD. Concord New Hampshire is 1 of them. Where on the gun is it, photos might help. But, it's likely that only by lettering the gun will you find out for sure.

The chicago police department does not issue weapons.

We purchased our own weapon when we came on the job.

Blue or Nickel?
Most agencies in my part of the world issued nickel weapons.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus... you live in Ohio by any chance?

Only way to have any hope of knowing is pay $50 for the letter telling you where it shipped.

Is it like this? Cleveland. I have a 5 inch M+P made in 1927 IIRC. There is a thread on here about those guns somewhere. lol

Hiram, that is identical to the mark on my gun. Cleveland, huh? Well, this one turned up in Ft. Worth, where it no doubt migrated in search of a winning sports franchise.

That is the Cleveland PD stamp. I have a 5" M&P that is also marked "C.P.D." on the back strap and a smaller circular stamp on the butt frame. Had a friend on CPD look up the records for mine and still have the info somewhere. There is a thread out there, if I find it I will post the link.

I agree, there are tons of CPD departments throughout the US. I can tell you if it's from an Ohio PD it's probably not from Columbus. They mark duty sidearms with a four digit number only.

According to my information, my gun was sold (probably traded for other firearms or equipment) in the late 70's, early 80's. CPD probably unloaded a lot of these old guns around that time and they have ended up who-knows-where.

Bill, that is the earliest record of that gun being issued. It was probably made around 1925...and I know that is not your birth year! Who knows where that gun was prior to 1943, but it was probably in the CPD inventory. I would have to bet that thing sent a few slugs zinging through parts of Cleveland in the day.

That's like my Official Police made in 1929 and was inventory to the Indiana State Prison. I always like to think it was at Michigan City when Dillinger was there.
