Have lurked here for quite some time, as I'm a big fan of S&W's. My old man was a Cleveland police officer and I have inherited all his weapons as he bought each one with each model switch thru the years, all the way back to his mod. 10-6 setup with Tyler t-grips. Learned to shoot on that and its still my favorite firearm to date. Then a couple gen. 3's and ending with the glock. Even still have his mod.38 airweight snubby humpback he used undercover, also rocking t-grips. War torn to all hell but its got the best character and its in the nightstand
What I came to ask is this:
I have a 6inch model 586 150th year anniversary CPD edition .357(1836-1986). Gold inlays down barrel with a gold inlay badge below hammer. 290/500 (im guessing that is its make# out of a total 500?) There is also 54 hand etched into the area where the ejector rod sits when the cylinder is closed. Smooth wood grips with a gold s&w logo and adj rear sight. Its held in a glass top wood box with blue velvet. Looks as if a few rounds were fired thru it at some point, but gun is in near perfect if not perfect shape.
I have found quite a few similar PD edition guns like this but not a single one from Cleveland. Are these in the more rare category of S&W commemoratives? Any ideas as to what the #54 etching represents? Were these type guns purchased or given as awards? Just trying to get some history on it. Any help would be great.
