Cracked an 8 lb of 4756 finally

I used up all of my 1 lb 4756's finally and now am working on my first 8lb jug. I hate to say it but at 7.5 grns per case, it will be just about exhausted when I finish up the 38 Super's that are on the bench and the 38/44's that are queued up on the floor.

I am sure glad to get rid of the 1 lb cans. I have so many small dregs can's that I am trying to use up just to recover the space.

That's enough powder to load about 7500 rounds. That many cases and bullets would totally fill my reloading bench so I can only conclude that you have a very large bench. I think it's also safe to say that you are rather fond of the 38 Super.

Is everyone aware that 4756 is being discontinued at the end of the year?

You better find another few 8lb jugs right a way if you want to keep using 4756 in your 38 Super loads since it will be discontinued at the end of this year.

I know normally there is plenty of a powder that is discontinued laying around the gun shops for many years after it's officially gone but since there is hardly any old powder around because of what's going on over the past 2 years I have a feeling when it's gone, it will really be gone...

I still have 7 unopened jugs of 4756. I figure I will just keep using it up over the next few years and maybe, just maybe by then IMR will bring it back.

Doubtful but one can always hope.

4756 is a really unique powder that worked particularly well for the Super and the 38/44. I will have to sit down and rework everything when I use up my stash of 4756. I should be able to go about 4 years on that stash and I can figure it out then.

To answer the question about he bench, I have about 3500 Super's on the bench and about 4000 38/44's sitting on the floor to be loaded. Summer is reloading season down here in the south so I can sit in the AC and crank ammo for the days it is nice enough to go shooting again.

That is one excellent powder....I have used it since the 1970s in .38 Super, .41 Magnum, 9mm and .38 Special. I am down to about 3#s and am hoping to find two more 8# jugs...one can hope.

Ironically, that is one of the few pistol powders that I can actually find on the shelves around here. I picked up some PB a little while back in desperation, so I am good for a while, and hope to get some Universal or HP38 before I get low on PB.

Peter, what kind of loads are you using 4756 in for your Super? I'm currently using 5.5 grains of AutoComp under a Missouri IPD #6 125-grain lead semi-wadcutter for target shooting but have some IMR4756 left over from the 1970s when I used it for medium-heavy loads in my .38 Specials and .357 Magnums. If your loads are of the mild target variety and the powder is burning cleanly, I might give that old powder a try in my .38 Super.

Currently I am loading the following:

7.5 grns of 4756 with a 135 grn Missouri Cast LRN to 1.272 with Starline brass and a light crimp. This gives me 1303 FPS which hits my target for shooting.

4756 burns clean at this pressure level. Is accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. Please remember 4756 is lot to lot variable so I recommend you work up over a chrono to your target velocity.
