Cracked Smith

Not only do you have a great gun, you now have a good story to go with it! Stay safe and enjoy!

Years ago I walked into my local hdwe store that had started handling firearms . A floor sales guy that knew me started telling about having a new gun with a cracked frame . He brought it out to show me . I explained it was just the seam between the frame and the side plate . So it has happened before , so don't feel bad Dougaz . Regards Paul

Nice Model 27. When all is said and done, you must be the most relieved guy on this forum ! Good for you.

That looks like a 6 1/2 inch barrel to me. To be sure, measure from the back barrel in the frame, to the muzzle. Most of us just measure from the face of the cylinder, as that is pretty darn close. The 6 1/2 inch barrel is pretty hard to come by, many more 6 inch barrel lengths made than 6 1/2 inchers!

Also, Smith lists the barrels at their nominal length. Installation and fitting might shorten the barrel somewhat. Many 6 inch barrels really measure 5 7/8. So, a 6 1/2 inch barrel may measure 6 3/8.

By the way, that is a great looking gun. They are my favorite Smith revolvers, with the .44 Magnums running a good second.

What he said!

When you discover the truth of the "cracked frame" you are hit with a feeling of Glorious Elation and Happiness followed by a feeling of ...Gee that was dumb ... why didn't I look at a parts diagram before posting that ... the sky isn't falling after all .

You're not the first to assume the crack is a crack and wont be the last ... Time to go shooting !
Gary

what he said and don't you dare ask me how I know.
