Howdy ladies and gentlemen,

I just picked up this little gem from my FFL. I found it for sale at Morphy's Auction House.

It is a S&W 29-2 that was used by the Louisville PD. From the research I've done here (thanks for posting everyone who knew the history on them) these guns were issued to members of the SWAT team and higher-ranking personnel.

I've been after one of these for 4 years and I'm ecstatic to finally have one.

Couldn't find any 44 special ammo locally, hopefully I can find some at a gun show this weekend

Wow! A thread with pictures of all of those would sure be interesting!

That is quite a find. Some time back, I got two Remington 870 receivers with that same stamp. I enjoy any agency/department marked firearm.

Do you know if the 29-2s were carried and used on the job, or were they more of retirement gift or something?

If you ever want to off load one of them please let me know.

The 29's were issued to the SWAT team and higher-ranking personnel

Nice gun. impressive list. Surprised there is not a model 19 in the bunch.

My own PD collection is quite small. I have:

A S&W 5946 used by Garden City PD in New York

A S&W 5946 used by an NYPD officer

A Ruger Police Service Six used by an NYPD officer. This was part of the last class to get the blued guns with spurred hammers.

A post war S&W M&P .38 purchased by a NYPD patrolman in 1946. That patrolman went on to use this gun in a shootout with 4 perps. He was awarded the Medal for Valor for the gun fight. I have the newspaper clippings of him being awarded the medal by the mayor. He got into this shootout in the same precinct I would work in 47 years later. It is my most valued firearm.

I'd really like a Model 29 one day.

Louisville sure came up with a nice frame stamp. What marking does the Louisville Model 10 have which you list in your collection?

Here's one on a Victory from June 1945:

Superb collection and something you should be quite proud of.

Thank you sir. I am happy that I've been able to build it steadily over the last 6 or 7 years.

I've been compiling a list of the ones I need and it is over 30. I hope by the end of this decade it will be complete

Thank you for your service sir. NYPD sidearms are really cool. I have a Model 10 that was issued to the Transit Police. I have yet to find out which officer it was issued to.

Can you post a picture of the news paper article?

Oh wow. That is an early one. I'm adding one to my list.

The Model 10-6 from the Louisville PD that I have is stamped the same way as the Model 29. That Model 10 has the most carry wear out of any handgun that I have. It must have been on the streets for 20 or more years

The GA State Patrol issued a Model 19 4". Was my brothers duty weapon before transitioning to Model 5903 9mm in the early 80's.

There were 400 Victorys in that shipment from June 6, 1945, addressed to Chief Kimberling. So there should be survivors around. I have found eight full or partial serial numbers besides mine searching various forums.

For a rarer gun, look for one of 25 Colt Commandos with 2" barrels that Kimberling also ordered about the same time, which have the same stamping. I've only encountered one.

In total, more guns than the whole department had officers at the time. I once talked to someone from the Louisville Metro Public Safety Museum about that; they had no idea what the chief wanted with all those revolvers, but had no records. He must have just stocked up.

The Georgia State Patrol issued the Model 66 between the 19 and the adoption of the 5900 series. I believe they also issued the 686, but it was in limited quantities.

Does he have either of those?

Wow! Thanks for relaying all of this information. I doubt I'll ever be able to find one of those Colt Commandos. It would be the find of a lifetime!

One of those victories would be a nice addition to the collection.

Maybe the Chief ordered all of those revolvers because he was an enthusiastic like us haha
