CS-1 picture thread - Are you in the club??

Nick,

There were a total of 3500 or so CS-1's produced....Janet Reno had about 1500 of them destroyed after she found out that they were being sold to mere citizens. That number included both 3 and 4 inch versions. As far as I remember, there were at least 5000 of the 3" 66 produced...so my bet would lie on the 686 CS-1 of any length being more 'rare' than the 66 3"

Maybe someone has the actual production numbers for the 66's?....I'm just going off of memory here...

The Border Patrol contracted pretty much the same thing, a four inch round butt 686, but they were marked BP-1. I was issued one in 1990 and carried it until I got off probation and thought I needed a semi. I've never seen one on the civilian market, likely due to Janet Reno's fanatacism. I would not bank on them being destroyed, however. They were supposed to be, but I would not be surprised if there are crates of them sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Weapons obsolete to one agency might wind up on the GSA schedule and available to other agencies...

Well here is my post and pictures from a similar thread 2 or 3 years ago.

Here is a few pics of my CS-1 4". Gunsmith Andy Horvath in Ohio did the custom front gold bead sight, keeping it the narrowed width like the CS-1 came with, and also added a ball detent lock up in the crane area. I switched out the cylinder release for a little contrast !! I could have bought the 3" from the same guy, but ran into a 3" F Comp at the same time and went with that. Also found almost at the ame time a 686 Quadraport 2.5", and that was close enough to 3 !

Got this bout a year ago. It MAY be unfired.

There needs to be a button that will allow you to 'LIKE' the whole thread. :p Nice guns gentleman, just be aware that I hate you all and covet all those nice CS-1's. :D

Here's mine:

I had a perfectly good Ruger Security Six with 4" barrel. For no good reason, I was NEVER able to shoot that gun to my potential. I brought the CS-1 home, and IMMEDIATELY was able to shoot MUCH better. I had a complete action done on the Ruger and even after that was NOT able to shoot it well. The Smith made me look GOOD! It is my house gun, loaded with Winchester 140 gr Hollow Points.

What is the name of the grip on this revolver?

Are they still available?

Know of a good source, at a good price?

I'd like to get a set for my 686 2 1/2"

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum bipe215. :)

Yes, all 686 CS1's had the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame.

The grips pictured on the 4" CS1 above were the issued grips. Pachmyar Compacts. They had a "window" in the bottom of the grips so that the serial number could be viewed without removing the grips. Regards 18DAI

Did all 4" CS-1s come with Pach Compacs w/window. Mine came to me with walnut RB magnas. I recently added these targets thanks to a member here.

According to what SmithNut told us....as best as I can recall...all the Customs Service 686 CS-1 revolvers were delivered with the Pachmyar grips - some with medallions and some without - as specified in the contract.

The public market overun guns were delivered with standard wood magnas.

I'll try and access some of my CS-1 reference material this weekend to make sure, but I'm confident that is what SmithNut told us. IMO SmithNut knows/knew more about the 686 CS-1's than anyone on the board......well.....on any gunboard really. ;) Regards 18DAI

How does one know if a CS-1 was issued to CS or the leftover ones. What does the box label look like and are they different for CS vs the leftovers.

The box labels look typical. There are no "Features" listed at all on this one. I've always wondered if the feds would keep the boxes, or immediately toss them.

Look at the yoke. The 686's that were subject to the recall are/were stamped with a letter M. The CS guns were sent back a second time so it got the 2M.

I got mine from the original CS owner. He said when they were sent back in for the second recall inspection they were returned in brown boxes not the numbered S&W box.

So what is the full feature set of these? I can see RB, satin stainless, adj rear sights, pinned front sight.

What else? Tuned action? Why are they considered the best 686s, just due to rarity?

Should I send it home?

I found this 4" in a small gun store in northeast Kansas over the holidays. Seems to be in good shape, although someone buggered up the sideplate screws a little. The store had flooded back in the early 90's, so i'm guessing it was the owner when he was cleaning his inventory. I thought $600 OTD was a pretty good deal :D

It doesn't have the M stamp yet. I called S&W and got a return label, but i've read a few negative posts regarding sloppy recall work. Should I send it back, or wait and see if it has primer-flow issues?

I wouldn't send it back unless you have a problem with the primers. Unless you plan to CC this revolver, that is.

Very nice find!

I've been looking for one of these for along time, no luck at all. If anyone has an extra they would be willing to part with please let me know.
I have a few 686's, 2 1/2", 4", 6" and a couple of 586's also a 581 but try as I might I've not run across a CS.
Any help?
RD
