Hi Folks - Looks like I got some additional CS45 questions. :D

Some time back I was emailing a guy who had new 3rd generation 45 acp 8 round mags for sale that he said would function in a CS45. I can't recall which pistol model (4506, etc) they were from. He did caution to use them only for range use as they may not be 100% reliable for SD and I can't remember why.

So my questions are as follows:
  1. Does any one use extended mags in the CS45?
  2. If so which model(s) pistol are they from?
  3. Would you say the 8 rnd mags are reliable to carry as a spare for SD?

Thanks and cheers!

From this statement alone, I am guessing that they are likely aftermarket Promag brand magazines, which I would say to avoid. Promags are known to be problematic and are generally considered to be a waste of time and money. Better to stick to factory mags with 3rd Gens.

I don't have any experience with the CS45 or know if the longer factory mags have any issues with them, though. I would guess that they would work fine, but hopefully someone who actually knows will chime in.

I have found to only stick with the Factory Mags made for your specific gun. To do anything else can wind you up in a world of hurt in a bad situation. Just the fact there is a proviso "Range Use Only" and "Not for self defense" are big red flags not to.

Here's a link to another post where I discussed some experiences and thoughts about the CS45-Only factory 6-rd magazines.

While the original 6-rd 4513TSW mags and the standard 7 & 8-rd 3rd gen mags will fit and lock into the CS45, they all lack the secondary dimples at the bottom/rear of the "P" lip indentations created to hold the top rounds stationary within the lips during the harder recoil & cycling of the CS45. If the top round slips forward under recoil, it can create a feeding stoppage.

That being the case, I don't carry any spare mags for my own CS45 that aren't the dedicated CS45 mags designed by the factory.

You have the absolute right idea, I Only have Factory mags as my primary and Tactical Reloads

I am hearing some good sound advice here. I think I will just stick with the CS45 mags as intended. Thank you all!

Good information for sure but a little disappointing. I'd planned on getting a CS45 someday since I already have a bunch of larger 45xx mags.

Just get the original or revised 4513TSW, instead, if you want another "reason" to use those 8-rd .45 mags.

I have some 7-rd 4513TSW mags I set aside as spares for my original (cutaway grip frame) 4513TSW.

When I carried a late-production 4513TSW as an issued weapon, I often carried an 8-rd mag as a spare.

I'm not really looking for a reason to use the mags, I've already got a 4513TSW pre-rail in addition to a few other 45's to keep them busy. It's more like having the mags was a thin excuse to buy a CS45 that I didn't need. :)

Wouldn't even sweat using larger mags at all.
I've got multiple 7 & 8-rd mags for range use,
and NONE of them have ever given me a bad feed,
which is why they put the indents in the Original CS45 mags.

I haven't yet used them as carry mags,
simply to rule out possible problems,
but as range mags, use 'em with confidence!

Previously considered putting the divots on my spare mags,
but have File 13'd that idea since then.

Often wonder if many of those feed issues were caused
by improper mag loading, failure to load and tap,
or limp-wristing...because I simply have not had any
of the reported feed issues with any of the 45XX mags so far.

So keep a solid grip on that CS45, and party on!

Just in case, this is what the difference looks like...

Back in the early days of using my original 4513TSW (normal, non-secondary dimpled 6-rd mags) and my CS45 with the early dimpled mags (what the factory told me were mag bodies with locally, machinist-done hand-stamped dimples, made before they incorporated the dimples into normal production of mag bodies), I vaguely remember trying some of the 4513TSW 6-rd mags in my CS45 one day.

As I recall, when using the normal (non-dimpled) 6-rd TSW mags I experienced at least a couple instances where the next-up "top" rounds had become displaced forward from underneath the mag lips during recoil/cycling, interfering with feeding (stoppage). Of course, I was also running some 200gr +P loads mixed in with standard pressure 230gr loads, and the extra recoil force of the +P's might've had something to do with it while trying the TSW mags in the CS45, as well. It's been so long I've forgotten those details. Anyway, I quickly decided to only use CS45 mags in the CS45.

I figured that if the factory engineers had decided that the extra dimple was needed as a standard feature in order to achieve optimal normal feeding in the fast cycling, hard recoiling little .45 ... I wasn't going to push my luck going in another direction, just out of laziness, when using the gun as an actual dedicated carry weapon.

I have ample mags for both .45's. The CS45 gets the mags intended for use in it.

Question . Why use extended mags in a pistol designed to be compact and hide-able ?

Compact mags in the gun are great for concealment, but lots of folks carry extended mags as backup in order to carry more ammo.

I carry a CS 45 I bought new. I have done so for over 20 years. I carry 2 extra loaded mags and plan on getting one more. That will give me 25 rounds. If I cannot do what needs to be done with that, I'm done. I do have a couple of 4506 magazines, with orange followers and rubber bumpers. They are not the ones that come with the 4506, but they fit it just fine. I haven't tried them in the CS 45 or 4513TSW, but I bet they would work for range, so you wouldn't have to change magazines so much.

I use the larger mags for range use only,.
if I were to want to carry them,
I'd dimple 'em just like the factory ones.
It really isn't difficult. All ya need is a dull flathead
screwdriver & a wood/plastic insert inside the mag.
Measure carefully, twice, then put it in a vise and smack it.

Mind you, my carry pistols already exchange OEM mags...
CS45 & Star M45...and already had to add a mag release
catch hole so they would switch effortlesly...
So two pistols in Smartcarry plus 2 mags each...
do believe I'm fairly well covered ;)

Altho you guys are making me want to fix the big mags up
so I can carry them instead...like I ain't got enough projects already ;)
