When I put a magazine into my CS9, it’s hard to get it to snap/lock in place. If while holding the magazine all the way in, I push the bottom of it forward slightly, I can get it to click/lock.

Is this something I can fix/adjust myself (I’m a complete novice at working on guns)?

It takes a fair amount of pressure to seat a magazine. You are actually pressing the magazine spring down in that last 1/16 of an inch or so to seat the magazine because the top round makes contact with the bottom of the slide. And you know how much pressure it takes to get that last round into the magazine. With that said, I can't tell you if what you are experiencing is normal or abnormal without trying it. I suggest having someone familiar with auto pistols try it and tell you if there is a problem or if it is normal.

Don't baby it, slap it up in there and give it a good rap on the bottom with the heal of your palm to be sure.

My 4040 takes a pretty good slap to seat the mag when fully loaded. This is a similar sized semi-auto to your CS9. As long as the gun feeds properly and shoots fine, I don't believe you have a problem. I have been known to be wrong before though.

Let’s see if I can describe it a little better. If I push the magazine straight in, ALL the way in, no matter how hard I push, it doesn’t click. There’s no more room to push it, it's flush against the bottom of the gun. But if I also push the bottom of magazine forward, it clicks and locks in.

My 915 doesn’t work this way. My 915 magazines will click and lock straight in.

Lock the slide back and then try to put the mag in. Then use the slide release to drop the slide.

Slingshoting the slide is not all it's cracked up to be.

At first I thought my CS9 had the same problem but I wasn't using enough hand strength.Slap it in and you will find that it gets easier once you get used to it.It definately is not the gun.....God Bless......Mike

how many mags you got?

does it do it to all of them?

if you have only one mag, inspect the notch cutout on the mag for slag or a burr.

how about your base plates. is there an obstruction between the top of the base plate and frame keeping it from seating properly.

how bout the hogue grips. could they be hanging down and offering an obstruction?

just a few suggestions.

if it still will not work, I would take it to a gunsmith (competent)

your second description does sound a little odd. Can you get your hands on another mag and try it?

My CS9's magazines are very hard to put in when they are loaded & the slide is forward.
It is easy when the slide is back.

This seems to be a prevalent thing with S&W autos. Since it is the norm on every S&W auto I have ever handled (at least the metal frame autos), I am surprised others have not noticed it.

They ship them out that way, and I have just gotten used to pushing forward a little when I push the mag up into place. I don't think there is anything to fix.

I’ve got two magazines and both are like this. I’m mainly a revolver guy, so my only other semi-auto is my 915. The magazines in the 915 go in and click easily.

If other CS9 guns behave like mine, it might be a common trait with some.
