Curious .44 Russian ammo

Howdy,

Here's a .44 Russian from "Union Metallic Cartridge".
The bullet is in two parts, lead at the base and metal.
Can someone give me some informations about this ammo?
How old?
For what for this bullet?

Metal capped was one name for this type of projectile. Supposedly gave improved penetration without excessive barrel wear. One of my older books (Stebbin's pistol and revolver encyclopedia) mentions them as being at around in several calibers from early 1900's up till the 20's or 30's.
