Hi.

Is the current prod. 617 a round or square butt?

Reason I ask, I have seen it advertised as both a round butt and a square butt. Davidson's lists it as a square butt, also they put the model number as "617-K22 Masterpiece" which is a little confusing. The same SKU#, 160584 is on their site for a 4" 617 and a 617-K22 masterpiece.

I wanted to make sure before I'd get the wrong grips for it should I see a set somewhere. (...then I need to find a 4" 10 rnd. 617 in stock somewhere.)

After all that, I have to get myself some help. I have no willpower left. I should not be looking for this gun. I "have" .22 pistols. Ruger MKIII's and Single Six's. It's that 10 round cylinder that is doing it to me. With the crane open and those 10 empty holes staring at me in pics I see of the 617, and the ability to shoot double action.... and it'll probably fit in the holster I have for my 686+, and how my wife likes to shoot the .22's when she goes to the range with me...

Thanks for any input!

As 410bore said, all current production 10-shot 617s have a round butt. If you like the square butt configuration better you'll just need to get some sort of round-to-square grips, lots of them are available out there.

I am not sure about older 617s, but 17s and 18s were square butt. And they were 6 shot too.

I love my 6" 617, got it a couple of years back and have used it a lot. I would have preferred a 4" but couldn't find one at the time and ended up settling on the 6", but no regrets, it is a great revolver.

The 617 is a K-frame; your 686 is an L-frame. The L-frame holster will have a taller cylinder opening - for a larger OD cylinder - and thicker front strap. The 617 will be loose! Lots of K-frame holsters available, of course.

Thanks!

Hey thanks for the info!

I thought I was going to have a hard time finding a 4" 617. In fact, I wasn't planning on getting one for a while.

After the original post I put up, I went out today to the shop I get my reload supplies at, and there it is, on the top shelf of his display counter, a 4" NIB 617.

There I was, and there it was... and I ah, well you know what I did. I had to.
I used the grocery money and the rent and... no, I did have a few bucks stashed away "just in case".

The fit and finish on it seem to be excellent. Barrel looks good inside, the front sight has a small shaving of metal next to it from driving it into the sight channel I guess, but I think it will come off with a pick or something.

Cylinder rotates nice, trigger feels good. Cleaned up and oiled. Ready to go.

Stainz: Thanks for the holster info. Yep you are correct about the size difference, but, I tried it in the Galco DAO I have for my 4" 686+ and for what I'll holster it for, it fits pretty darn good. I'll probably only holster it while at the range just to keep from having to lay it down on something, but the Galco does have a tension screw on it that would probably snug the 617 into it.

I'll post how it does at the range. It sure is a nice revolver.
