Ok, i always like to ask for advice and opinions on my lil projects..lol... since i just skeletonized my sd3g trigger, my new trick is to....... cut the barrel down to 14.5" and have a PWS FSC556 muzzle brake pinned and welded, also with having the barrel dimpled...

now.... i can have the cut, crown, thread, pin, weld, done locally..... the dimple, i cant find noone local... im in new york and i called a few shops in long island, and ct., i think i have to find a place in PA.... i know what you people are thinking..." why dont you just ship it to adco", but i just dont feel ok about shipping stuff out... ....i dont know. ......... and also i dont wanna bend the extracter on the end of the barrel during shipping... plus i wanna meet the person who does work on my toys, cause i only like to do my own mods, if i can....

so whats out there people, help a fellow hobbiest out........

Like the KAC SPR look. Dunno 15-22 barrel is not the same diameter. Might not be able to have the dimples as deep as a standard AR barrel. I would have a back up barrel handy, just in case.

Ship it to ADCO, or risk getting something like this.

I just shipped my barrel off to get cut down. Used a shop rag and tape around the extractor, and packed it extra well. Should be ok.

If not, Ill replace the extractor, not that big of deal.

w0ady: im doin it just for the look , just as Juvicator mentioned.. the KAC SPR...

Juvicator: yea i thought about that to, thats also why i wanna talk to somebody in person instead thru an email, sch as that message might not get to the actual smith who does the cutting...

xxspudxx: i thought of putting a pvc pipe around the extr. and part of the barrel, n tape it up also when or if i ship it..... and i would love to buy another barrel...

i even thought of gettin another rifle jus for parts....i was kinda looking into taking the ext. off, but i dont wanna ruin the alignment,... i guess, i really dont know.

lmao, i even thought about the dremel or a another rotory tool with a carbite bit and doin it myself.....lol...

thank you everybody for your opinions and comments

Have someone do it on an alum rod of same diameter to see if it looks the way you want. Looks like the others are hit with a .375 ball end mill.

thats the thing, every place i call they say that they dont have the equipment and dont want to try. and might mess it up

Really? You calling gunsmiths or machine shops? A gunsmith I can understand maybe not having the right equipment, but any machine shop should have mill with rotoary axis setup or swissturn machine.

your right, ive only been calling gunsmiths. And asking if they can refer me to someone else, n the answer i get is no..... i guess if a machine shop that had a good reputation, the smiths would use them...... but i dont know any...

Do you have any pictures of what you want?
Any machine shop with a milling machine and an indexer should be able to do what I think you want done.

I wonder what effect, if any, dimpling will have on the strength and integrity of a standard diameter 15-22 barrel. Isn't the fluted barrel larger in diameter to accommodate the fluting?

I know all the fluted Ruger 10/22 barrels are 0.920 in diameter - considerably larger than the stock 0.599 barrels.

That looks like a considerably more substantial barrel than the one on a 15-22. If the dimpling weren't so "aggressive" ...

Neat look, though. I imaging it would help with heat dissipation, too.

Why don't you put a shroud on it and have that fluted or dimpled and save your barrel that could potentially turn into a nightmare... just a thought... good luck.

Yes those pics are of very aggressive dimples... I'm only gonna go for the look, so It doesnt need to be so deep in the milling. As for strength, I guess it'll be weaker... But it's only for a .22, and the only thing I'm shooting at is paper... Also I did some research and found that some styles of dimpling (It seems there are different patterns ) will not make the barrel any weaker.... And also I found out about fluting, spiral fluting is weaker than the straight fluted barrels...

Barrel shroud, I wanted to go that route but I'm in New York .... So I asked some shops about it, and they all looked at me as if I wanted to smuggle in nuclear bombs...lol.....

Guys thank u again for the info and opinions.....

Lol..... I like that one... Put a smile on my face for the moment.....
