Cylinder clearance for model 66-8 2.75 barrel

Hi there folks!I ran into the problem of the cylindrical burn marks on my cylinders of my model 66-8 and my 2 model 69s.i was watching a YouTube video and a gentleman stated smith would send you longer screws for the front top strap hole near the barrel.worked perfect on my 69 with 4.25 barrel,but I have a slightly protrusion past flush on my 66-8.it is not hitting the cylinder but I was wondering about the required clearance between the cylinder and that screw before it would cause a problem or should I just file it to fit flush and touch up with blue?oddly enough the 66-8 screw was a perfect fit in the model 2.75 barrel 69.the replacement screw actually touched the cylinder when I tried it.thanks for the help!

I'm glad it worked out for you. I called based on the same information and was told, emphatically, there is only "one" length of screw. So I went down to the local Ace and bough a couple of the right pitch and filed to fit, re-crowned the head and done. It was actually a bit of fun doing.
 
That is what I was figuring!found a thread block on ebay and you can run your screw in and file off the end and when you screw back out it fixes the threads!Just like a nut but couldn't find one that size!

I actually have the correct die so I run it onto the screw before any metal removal then just chase the threads as it spins off.
 
Ok guys,got my feeler gauges in and it looks like it's have .010 between the front top strap screw and cylinder.i have .013 of normal clearance there for the normal cylinder clearance on the top.and .005 cylinder gap clearance.i feel .010 clearance is plenty and should never be an issue but I do have that thread check block also and may just take off that .003 just to cure my OCD lol

Not trying to be harsh with 66-8 or admonish anyone else but we are grown men and women and should communicate as such. The information discussed on this forum is, by far and away, a cut above most others and the civility surely is. Following in this vein of thought I try to communicate clearly with correct grammar. Do I make mistakes, I am sure I do and don't mind being corrected as that is how I learn.


Is it really that much to ask that a sentence be written in such a fashion it does not need to be read two or three times to put it together in your mind to be coherent?

Yes, it is too much to ask. Many people are not as smart and educated as you obviously are. It is a big effort for some people to write in a manner that would satisfy you. If you don't like the way their posts are written, don't read them.
 
After you go through all that work, you will still have burn marks, only less noticeable. S&W screwed up when they redesigned the frame and relocated that threaded hole, and they won't fix the basic problem.
yeah I noticed my 500 mag hole is alot further back.well i guess any reduced burning is better than what it was

exactly!I agree!I'm not trying to pass an English test,this is all for fun and being informative and learning and helping each other out!
 
I just bought a Model 19-9 Classic to pair with my 4 inch 66-8. I saw the same video and called Smith & Wesson last week for the replacement screw for my blued Model 19. They are sending one, but the woman I spoke with said the screw would not be flush and a gunsmith would need to install it. She also said any damage would not be warranted.

I don't care about the burn marks on my stainless-steel finished revolvers since those marks wipe off easily with a lead removal cloth. I used to use Flitz metal polish and a soft toothbrush. With the Flitz I would scrub the outside of the cylinder for twenty minutes. With the Birchwood Casey lead removal cloth, my stainless guns are cleaned up in a couple minutes. But I won't use those things on the M19's blued finish. I messaged the guy who did the video and just ordered some of the same product he used to clean the burn marks off of his Model 586 Classic.

Congrats on that 19!I ended up getting a thread block and ran my screws through it and filed off the ends a touch.I got them flush and reblued the filed tips.It actually turned out ok!Do you remember the name of that product?That also was a very good video!
